Should light be over seedling dome?

will a cfl over a dome holding seedlings, increase growth, or will they root faster in the dark?

It's a myth that plants root faster in the dark. The more light you give a clone the faster it will root, because it needs the energy from photosynthesis to grow the new roots.

Don't put the light to close, but you do need some form of light fo them to root.
I would say 23 w cfl 24 inces above untill rooted.

Stay safe and high.

damn dude... i have a 400 watt metal halide two feet above my seedlings(just broke through the soil) and there rocking... i can almost see them grow

the combo of having both a dome and a light source will help with keeping temps up, and creating a moist environment......remember, the cuttings need to absorb water from their leaves since there are not roots ( at this point ).....hence the dome and humidity.

once roots appear, the dome can be removed.......

bbgun,
I'm going to assume that your thread title is correct and your question is about seedlings and not clones (two completely different animals).

Seedlings need a light very close so that they don't get all spindly and fall over.

Domes aren't the best for seedlings. It depends on how humid the room is. If it's a reasonable RH like 35%, then you don't need a dome and I think it will actually increase infection risk.

Where I live it is very dry <15% often, so a dome works well with a heat mat under the tray and light outside the dome. If your humidity is higher as ET said you don't need the dome just keep your media nice and warm and moist. The light inside the dome seems complicated and you don't need it there, What type of media are you popping these beans in? You need to keep the roots dark and sufficient light to promote photosythesis and keep them growing.

Seedlings need a few things to get started.

1)Moisture
2)Warmth
3)Light source to guide it's direction.

they stretched inside the dome, have both under their own 20w cfl. Is a 20w cfl good for veg, or should I switch to the 150w hps early?

Greetings bbgun80....
I have about 25 RH here and i use a dome, mat, and light. I used the light after my seedlings sprouted and streched about 2 inches in 6-7 hours. Lesson learned. light now sits above dome. I burp the dome every 4 hours or so to let O2 in.
I would veg each out at least a week under the cfl's. After that I would slowly lower that 150hps over them until you find your sweet spot. 2 cents?
