I used the one that optic linked as well as the one I linked. That microscope like one was way too awkward for me to accurately judge the trichs, but lots of people use it successfully.

The microscopes work well if you cut a small piece of leaf and lay it on something for support.

If you don't want to cut a minuscule piece of sugar leaf, a 30x jewelers loop can be held steady enough to see trich color.

A pair of binoculars turned backwards allowed me to see the trichs pretty damn clearly. Got this tip from reading the old posts right here.

nice; if i wasn't able to drive to the store and get one when i needed one i'd be all over this kind... the bulb in the rs unit is sorta dim :tiphat:

To give credit where it's due, both units were mentioned in another thread. That's where I got the pointer.

The $5 microscope is tiny, smaller than a mind can grasp. I was almost shocked when I opened the box. The thing is (err...) microscopic. But, it does work much better than anyone could expect and it allows for viewing on the plant without the need to remove a sample.

The Carson is a much bigger, better-built animal. It's an impressive piece of gear. Like the little microscope, it can be used without taking a sample, albeit not as easily. At all. OTOH, when used like the RS microscope, this thing allows for views the RS could never dream of. Everything is clear to the eye, and one can see a much larger, better-defined expression of the trichs.

FWIW, I ordered a couple more $5 units to keep in stock. They're cheaper than the batteries used to power them. <grin>

I turn binocs around, it works well, and if they have removable lenses, you can tape them to a camera lens and have a super macro lol but serious it works

Not THE cheapest but, the BioniCam fluctuates greatly in price and has been known to hit $11.

These shots are all "live" from the garden. No cutting required.

well looks like that microscope from dealsextreme (the $4.85 shipped one) will take 12-17 days to get here, and im already on day 32 of flowering...does anyone think i should go get one from RS to tide me over?

Unless you're planning to finish the grow at 6-7 weeks, you have plenty of time to order the small magnifier. Good luck.
