Old debate revisited in coco

I have searched and found (including other sites) many answers to the question
"how much medium to final weight?"

I have seen many answers in soil and hydro is kinda hard to figure,
but 1 gallon of dirt = 1oz dry weight, also have seen answers that vary all the way up to 10 gallons of dirt = 1lb which is almost a 2 to 1 ratio.

So what about coco?

How much coco to final weight is a rule of thumb?

Not the extra special grows that give some unreasonable weights, there is always one of those somewhere, but just the normal every day grow.

your question applies to soil not coco/hydro as coco and hydro don't have issues with roots being pot-bound like soil does. You can grow a monster tree in a shot glass, if you fertigate it enough.

The question still remains though, because you have to put coco in some sort of container, and hydro in the sense of rockwool and clay pellets are not measured the same.

So how about a rewording of the question,

How final weight would you get out of the following coco containers
1/2 gallon
1 gallon
2 gallon
3 gallon
5 gallon
10 gallon

and yes each grower is different but as a general rule what would you pull out of these containers.

There is no "general rule of thumb." A lot of factors have to be taken into consideration.

How long of a veg period?
What strain?
What size light?
Etc.

I think the problem is that coco is more like a cube of rockwool, while it looks like a pot of dirt. You water a pot of dirt and then water it again when the plant has used it up. You water rockwool regularly like any other hydroponic medium.
So, the container size question doesn´t work the same as it does with potting mixes and such. If you see what I mean, it´s just like asking "How much does a 4 inch rockwool cube yield, on average?"

check out some of my threads. i use 2 gallon and 3 gallon pots. and i average 4 oz's+ per 2 gallon pot, and have yielded close to 1 lb many times in the 3 gallon pot.

I've been learning recently that the pot doesn't need to be too big and that it's actually been more problematic (for me) to have big pots unnecessarily...

I'm not the grower that knows the high limit of this equation but I've got plants definitely getting over 2 oz to a gallon (equivalent) ....a heavy strain or a grow perfectly dialed in would only improve on this....

I already have enough big pots in case I want to grow a few monsters, but I've gone out and gotten plenty of 1 and 2 gallon pots recently after seeing what small pots can do...

When lights turn on I may get off my azz and snap a pic to serve as an example

I understand that it isn't like dirt, and I'm not trying to be hardheaded. But the way krunch and simple answered is more what I was looking for. krunchbubble I have looked at some of your threads and I understand what you mean by sometimes getting much more than normal from the same size pot that you usually get 2-4oz from. But on average when you put a 2 gallon pot into flower what do you expect to get from it. I know that it depends on how long you veg prior to flowering. At the same time if you do not repot a plant that is in a 1 gallon pot that has been veged for 4 weeks and put that into flower what would you expect to get. Probably not the same that you would expect to get if you put that same plant into a 2 gallon pot before flowering it.
Even though it is in coco and that is a hydro medium you are still in a container that could limit the amout of roots that are produced.

Hope that all made sense.

Keep the conversation going

For me, its all about how long can i stare at these vegging plants, (knowing its gonna be 8-9 more weeks til harvest), before they drive me CRAZY!

im still trying to work it out, but im definitely gonna be able to get 3 2.5Gal containers, to cover 4X4 feet. Id like to get it down to 2, but im not sure i can support this pace (with vegging area)

So, as i continue to skirt your question... Id say, taking into account my own patience, i can get 2oz/Gal(with the correct pheno).

2 oz from a 6" square pot and 3 oz from a 1/2 gal pot.

Wow. Amazing yields everyone.
I have been considering switching over to coco but now it is confirmed. I'm glad I stumbled in here.
