Do portable air conditioners leak smell?

I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not single hose portable air conditioners (sharp 10,000btu unit) leak smell through the exhaust? I hope someone can help,

Thanks, Orygun.

No, there is no air exchange through a portable AC. Only heat exchange.

EDIT:

Only with a dual-hose design. If the AC creates negative pressure inside the room (single exhaust hose), smell can escape.

Orygun, I think you just got help on this. And with a first poster, no less. The owners manual for the CV-P10LC, for example, says:
http://www.sharpusa.com/~/media/D6A4CB5FA08E41EBBD69E2D5A9BE9F05.ashx said:
This air conditioner blows the warm air generated by the unit outside the room via the exhaust hose while in cool mode.
Accordingly, the same amount of air as that blown out will enter the room from outside through any openings in the room.

Sounds stinky. What's your room design and ventilation plan?

u need a dual hose system. stay tuned if you're not in a hurry, I'm putting together a DIY portable air conditioner made from a window unit. This way your a/c sits inside your house, and you can run it year round without anyone hearing it. And generally I've found the unit I made more efficient as it sits indoors during the summer and thus doesn't heat up to almost triple digits. But definitely a single hose system will leak a shit ton of smell outside of where you want it to be. Like someone else stated, it will create negative pressure, because it is using some of the cold air it is generating to cool down the compressor and rear radiator and thats the air that exhausts through the single hose. Whereas a dual hose brings outside air, cools the rear components of the a/c, and then gets sent back outside. This way the inside air and the outside air do not touch. So ya must be a dual hose, or you'll let everyone know that you're growing.

I'm actually talking with someone about modifying portable air conditioners do that they can be used with small tents/rooms.

We'll be taking apart a couple next week and modifying them to see if my idea works and if its possible to make it into a self install kit.

the air is gonna smell like what ever is the room it is in... I has to suck the air from somewhere...

if you get a dual hose you may be able to make the hose go from a room that dont stink so the exhaust will not smell as well...

or

you can hook up a small carbon filter to the intake house...

even the dual hose a/c's leak a little, If you have the funds get yourself a split ductless a/c.

yeah thanks for the help guys it didn't cost much used so not a big loss. I don't think it was gonna cut it for a 3k flower room anyways. Mini split it is before summer any way, do you guys think Mr.slims are the way to go or is there a cheaper option thats as good?

I have a 12,000 btu portable with the single hose. And it does indeed reek stank air. I use a carbon scrubber to scrub the air in the room. This works well for odor control both inside and outside the premise.

And depending on how far south you are that 10,000 will only handle two lights at best and then not very well.

A dual hose, in theory, won't leak smell. But in reality, they are not made to be 100% airtight, so you'll have to tape up/seal up/caulk up the hose connections. A single hose setup will double as room exaust (while it's running). I have 4 600 watters on closed loop fan, and my 11,000 btu portable strains pretty hard in the summer to keep temps in the mid 70's, and it dumps a lot of water. The drain ports on these things are always on the floor, so I elevated mine to drain into a bucket, if they can't drain off the water, they shut down.
