Seed sprouts stretching?

I have some sour d and chem d seeds that have just started to sprout. Thing is, a couple are starting to fall over from being too tall and lanky. Is this normal? I have the lights pretty close. They are in rapid rooters in a propagation dome. Thanks.

yes its normal, ma want to remove the dome now they are above ground, seedlinings love oxygen rich environments...try to hold them up and support them best you can till the stalk begins to thicken....take a rapid rooter and flip it upside down and use that for support i somtimes rip them in half and flip them upside down enclose the seedlings lanky stem in between the halves works great

O,
Ya, pretty damn common. You have to keep flouro bulbs (T-8) almost touching to stop it. I use little bamboo scewers and a wire tie to make a support.

One trick I learned is to use tall cups that are only half full of starter mix. Then when the inevitable stretch occurs...you can add more soil and part of the stem then becomes root. Works good.

Very Common,
I use cotton buds sometimes(Cotton Removed) as steaks. Split stem of the Cotton Buds shaft to about 10cm & plonk it in the RW cubes, They make a handy V-Shape sterile steak! Its usually the placement of the light (height) that causes it like ET has pointed out!

Thanks for the replies, peeps. I'll sort it out. One more question since this is my first time starting from seed... I plan on vegging these moms via E&F and was wondering if any one had any pics to show about how big the first two real leaves need to be before I take them out of the dome and start feeding.

I just take a twist tie and make a little holder, like a ground quiver for arrows, stick it in. Good luck!

GENIUS! I'M NORMAL!!

Look at a couple things. It's gonna vary with everyone because the environment will be different, but...

Watch the cotyledons...once they're exhausted and withered, that means that supply of food is gone.

Watching the color of the leaves is more important then the size. If you see the green fading a bit...then start feeding (always start very weak).

Soil plants can go long then soiless before you need to start...obviously.

PS: Get them out of the dome asap...they like high humidity at first but they need to toughen up and get some real world experience. Just a few hours a day out of the dome and keep increasing it and soon they'll be OK.

Thanks again, took the dome off and put the light even closer.

Sounds good. My place is really dry...10% RH yet I can manage to keep seedling alive (w/o dome) just by altering the micro-climate. A few trays of water near them. Also that's one of the few instances when I'll mist them a bit.

things that can make seedlings stretchy are high heat, light too far away or not enough light, and overwatering the medium. try to avoid these issues and you should not have that problem in the future.
