First Attempt at a PC Micro Grow

So this will be my first Micro Grow attempt in a pc case. This is also my first "real" post so bear with me.

I got a mid-sized pc case with dimensions: 16.5" Deep, 7" Wide, and 16" Tall. This will be my vegging box. I gutted it completely, sorry I didn't get pictures of all of that real fun process! (my post count is low so my pictures are lousy anyway)

The idea is to grow 6 seedlings in here with hopes of getting 2 or 3 females to do a scrog in my bigger case.

The case I just scored for flowering is 16" Deep, 8" Wide, and 24" Tall. Still brainstorming ideas on how it is gonna be set-up. Not to mention the gutting process is taking forever, it's an old tower and has spot welds rather than rivets.

Here's a few pics of the vegging box running:
picture.php

This is the front of the case with fake cd drive and 3.5" floppy drives glued in. The lights are on inside and you can't see any light escaping.
picture.php

The power supply area and the pci slot area is plastic hobby screen with nylons wrapped around them to block out light. As you can see, with the lights on, you can see no light.
picture.php

The grow area is big enough to hold 6 4" fiber pots. From this angle you can see the 2x26 watt floros, the 3" exhaust fan and the big intake hole in the front of the case. Unfortunately, these pictures are horrible and it does nothing to show off how bright this box actually is.
picture.php

Here's a better shot of the intake. It is plastic hobby screen with a carbon pad in the front of it to block out all the light. At the front of the computer, there is a big intake area under the front of the faceplate and if you put your hand there, you can feel the air flowing in pretty good.
picture.php

Here's a shot of the cubby area I use to exhaust the air. The screen in the bottom is covered with nylon and the power supply area is also covered. Surprisingly, no light leaks from either area.

More to come!

Forgot to mention. As of tonight, 6 bagseeds have been cracked and planted into the pots. As soon as they break through, I will post some more poor quality photos! :D

That looks great Ac|d, that's an awesome little veg box. I look forward to seeing the flowering one once you get it done.

Do you know what medium you'll be growing in and what nutes will you be using?

for my first attempt at this, I'll stick with what I know.. soil.
plus I have a bunch of it lying around anyway.
gonna be shopping for nutes in the morning, so I'll decide by then :).

just got the flowering box gutted finally, I'll post pics shortly.. a couple of bloody fingers and 2 broken drill bits, but hey, that's what you get right?

right now I am highly considering two 70W hps as the back of the flowering box will not be stealth, it's going to have the scrubber and ballasts all mounted externally. as long as the front of it looks like a computer, it will blend in with all the other towers lying around.

Flower Box Update

Flower Box Update

so I finished gutting the flowering pc case last night. What a fun job that was! Definitely wish I had some smoke for that process.

On to the pics! (sorry.. camera still not working, crappy cell phone pics to follow)

picture.php

Here is the front of the case. It's an ancient server tower but this thing is huge and should fit my needs perfectly.

picture.php

The back of the case looks as if it was set up to have an exhaust fan for the lights! Also notice the plate where the motherboard and pci slots sit is removable. that saves a lot of cutting work.

picture.php

Here's the inside of the case. There was a support bar that ran across the front but I removed it before I took the picture. Only 4 spot welds held it on so it was pretty easy to rip out.

picture.php

Finally gutted! A few hours, 2 broken cobalt bits, and a bloody finger is all it took. Note the holes right in front, almost as if it was perfect for an intake!

That's all the pics for now. With all this room and the perfect location of that rear fan mount, I am highly considering dual 70W HPS in this flower box. It's still a work in progress though, so nothing is final yet.

It is a intake :D looks awesome though, that case looks HUGE. How tall is it? I've been looking around for a taller case myself

That thing is a giant. Whatever you decide on doing for light, you should have plenty of room in that PC case to flower some good looking girls.

Awesome looking good. Find that tape measure im curious of the size of the flower pc, looks like you scored a super old tower case or scored a server case.Should give you tons of room for a proper micro pc grow

Nice find!

You're not going to find PC cases much larger than that I don't think...

I think I'll save that site... I could use a big PC case... :chin:

Update: the server tower is 24.5 inches high. exact height as that tower Casper.. good find!

the 6 seeds that I dropped in the dirt have broken through. Once of them doesn't look so good though.. I'll give it a couple days and toss it if it doesn't improve.

I'll post some pics tonight if I get a chance

been working on the flower box a little. Ended up going with a 150W HPS !

still need to figure out what kind of reflector I'm going to make for it.. any suggestions are welcome.

picture.php

here's the top view of the socket and bulb mounted. The brackets are not trimmed or securely affixed yet, I was just trying to get a feel for it. But as you can see, it fits pretty good.

picture.php

the bulb is perfectly centered in the box. It's definitely gonna be super bright in this thing!

a close-up of the bulb and the clearance to the top.

more updated later!

150W HPS?!?!?! in a PC??? dont you think it will be too hot for cool down in a PC ?

nope. There's gonna be a glass partition between the bulb and the rest of the computer along with 2 intake and 2 exhaust fans solely for the purpose of cooling the bulb.

so it's been 6 days since putting the cracked seeds in the dirt, I figure I'd give you all a picture update. enjoy :)

picture.php

I just watered them and rotated them around to evenly distribute the light. The one on front right was a little droopy, should of watered him/her last night.

I will try to get pictures of the seedlings up at least once a week.

if you haven't figured out a reflector yet. i would suggest maybe just getting some mylar and laying across the opening on the top of your case. it should work pretty good.
