Not only is it not a bad idea, it's a very good idea. Find vendor's on eBay selling 'Feliz' cfl bulbs.. they come in 125, 200 and 250 watt sizes and in both veg and flower (2700 and 6500 kelvin) models. The do require a large Mogul socket, but the vendor that lists them also lists a socket cord combo for a good price. I've been using these since the first of the year for veg and actually plan on using one of them for 'early flower' for their first couple weeks of 12/12 then move them under the 600 watt hps. Further down the road, I plan on replacing my 600 hps with 4 of the 250 cfls.. they are that good.

thnx guys. ive been using hid lights for veg cause that's all i had they worked so good i never stopped but i think i might be in the minority.but i'm gonna expand and electricity is a concern. i also get the feeling that the HID's are overkill for vegging, iwas checking into 125w cfls what do you think?are t5's better, or both?

Vegging with t5 allows me ultimate assurance. My plants grow slower under a t5 compared to a halide, plus I don't have to worry about high temperatures. This allows me to focus 100% on bloom.

Best of luck.

I don't know. I'd stick with HID if I were you. I assume you're using MH for vegging? If you only have an HPS ballast, try a dual arc bulb or a MH conversion. Fluros are fine and use less wattage, but if your shooting for 'bang for the buck' nothing is like HID's.
