Pinching seeds Test Good or Bad? Whatcha think?

L

LolaGal

What is ya'lls opinion on pinching seeds to test them?

I don't think it is a good idea, unless you are testing to see if they are ready to harvest.

I gave a friend some beans and they immediately started pinching and crushing them.

I said "WTF you doing?"

They explained as how they did not plant seeds they could not crush between his fingers.

I think this is a dumb idea. And a waste of potentially good beans.

what do you think?

I have germed beans that were white and really were pulled too early, but that is not the case here.

Also some beans just are not black or gray, but a lighter color.

I hate to see somebody waste beans.

Do you mean they did plant seeds they could not crush? When we did some pollen chucking and had hundreds seeds to sort through I did a pinch test on them, my assumption being that if the seed is undeveloped enough that it cannot survive having some pressure applied to it, it likely isn't developed enough to sprout. This of course was a few weeks after we picked them from the plants and gave them some time in Tupperware. Nine times out of ten I could tell when they could be crushed by looking because they clearly were not developed seeds, but every once in a while a seed that looks almost normal would crush to nothing between my fingers.

If I was gifted maybe 10 to 20 seeds I would not do this, but if I had a few hundred to work with I would probably go through and do it.

Wrong forum Lola.

I don't think so Newbie, but while we are on the subject of appropriate talk in the Den.....

All it says on the Den's door is "Light one up and talk", or something to that effect.

So I figure I wanted to talk about pinching seeds in the Den.

While I smoked a fatty. I got the bestest dank in USA... :D

I meant to say that they were crushing good seeds that were viable looking.

I gave em 10 or 20.

Dude would only plant crush proof seeds.

I think it is a potential waste. Some immature beans will pop, some don't, but in the case of nice pretty beans, give em a chance. Let em do their thang... :D

I agree that it is a waste. It only takes a small amount of pressure to test if they're viable, it's not like you're going to give them shitty seeds, ya know?

I have read here that when sprouting your seeds, if you put them into a glass of water, and they immediately sink, then they are unlikely to sprout because they had air holes in them that probably didn't let the stuff inside the seed develop properly. Seems like a better test than destroying your seeds.

We pull about a 1000 seeds per plant when we breed during the winter getting ready for spring grows outdoors. When you are looking at 10,000 + seeds, we pinch.

LOL. I have heard people say if they DON'T sink that they are bad seeds, but your explanation would make more sense... lol. Give Seeds A chance.. :D Interesting post thanks.

I agree, 10000 seeds would be a lot of pinchin though. I think I would just throw extra 3 or 4 in a pack and run em through.. lol.

But I am talking just 10 or 20 beans from one strain that they did not have before.

I guess I am still pissed at the one dude who grabbed up my Peyote cactus seeds once and squeezed them to see what would happen... lol.

[Used to be able to order Peyote cactus seeds from Thompson and Morgan Seed Catalog.]

Off-topic: When a teen, my best friend's father was a card-carrying member of the peyote church!

Man! I miss those days!

On-topic: On the surface I can see where pinching the seeds might be an indication of viability. I just think it's bad form and takes more than a little brass for the giftee to pinch them in front of the gifter!

I do the crush test because I figure I dont want to waste time. I wouldnt do it with seeds I bought but for the ones I pick outa bags to plant outside.

its easy to tell ifa seeds mature by looking at it,of course pale tiny seeds are prolly shit, the hollow ones pop ez,I dont have to pinch a seed to tell.

Pinching seeds is like the old witch test, they might have been good seeds but they are dead now anyway.

you can use water soak to determine the stasis of the seeds without risking injury to virile ones

I'd rather just try 'n germ em. Or if they look like crap to begin with, feed em to the birds. Plenty o seeds where dems came from, ye.
If my pals started pinching seeds that i just gave em, i'd take em back and show him the url to seedboo. Tell em to buy and pinch their own stuff, if mine aint good enough for you, you heartless bastid.
