Stadium vs. Coliseum... WTF?!

I've noticed several posts in this forum as well as others in which a stadium grow is spoken differently of than a coliseum grow. I thought they were the same thing?

Can someone explain this to me?

the coliseum is a prefab unit sold by arista.
stadium growing refers to a vertical grow op with staggered shelving/seating for the plants.
like the steps of a stairway or.......
a stadium!
(duuuur)
most stadium style grows are built by hand by/for the grower

Stadiums are as described above, generally 8-10' long and usually with no plants in the end zone. I run two of them, but I put plants in the end zone.
Coliseums are basically the same but are round. This should utilize ALL of the light better than a stadium. I've tried both and found the stadium MUCH easier to manage,i.e., easier to get in or out of.(Giant Ass)

I figured it might have been something like that. So the stadium isn't exactly vertical then is it? Yeah, I know you stack plants on shelves, and they get higher up, but they also go further back... like steps, as it was said.

Basically I'm just asking for reference as to what to call my grow journal when I make it. I don't want to call it a coliseum if that only refers to the pre-manufactured kit, but I don't want to call it a stadium since I won't be using the "stairway" type shelving.

I'll be growing true vertical... straight up. Basically a homemade coliseum.

While we're here, is there any distinct advantage or disadvantage between the two? I'd imagine that the coliseum would be better due to the plants being a uniform distance from the bulb, rather than the stadium which the higher the plant is, the further it is from the lamp.

A round vert grow has all the plants the same distance from the string of lights, and the plants are getting that same light from the bottom buds to the tops. Very high quality bud. It uses the full 360 degrees of the bulb, so no light is wasted shining towards other bulbs like in a stadium or bouncing off a reflector and back into the bulb in one of those prehistoric flat gardens. :puke::tongue:

The downside is plant access can be difficult depending on your design, and plant numbers will be higher because you have plants in the spots where light was wasted in other systems. Check out kootenay's grow to see one way it can be designed for easy plant access if in a larger room.

The cage and coliseum were the first round vertical systems sold, and many people seem to have started using the name coliseum to refer to any vertical grow. I found that very confusing when I first came back online and started searching to see what people were doing with their coliseum systems these days.

Just refer to yours as a vert grow, that's what it is. :)

This is exactly why I posted this thread. I get that same feeling, and... meh. I'm a perfectionist of sorts, I s'pose. I try to make sure I get things right, otherwise I don't see the point in doing it.

But thanks a lot man, that's basically the exact information I was looking for. I appreciate it.

I was going to build mine as an octagon, with all 8 legs of the octagon being a rack on wheels. Or maybe I'll keep 2 of them hooked up at the appropriate angle and have 4 racks. Something like that, anyway.

Dude, I'm like super-excited. I've grown my share of flat gardens, but never more than 6 plants flowering. Never did a SOG either. So this is quite a step-up for me. I'm starting with 1kw MH/HPS, hopefully I can manage to get another 1kw light stacked on top of it by the time I take cuttings and send 'em to flower. I'll be running 48 plants per 1kw, so... I'm...pumped.

Octagon on wheels sounds ideal. When I ran a coliseum I put it on wheels so I could access the plants easier. The octagon would allow you to leave more of the plants getting light while working on the one section.

It is super exciting, and your setup sounds great! Are you going to veg them in the flower room? Not sure if you have a veg room setup for that many plants yet.

I'll most likely be vegging in my flower room for the time being. I had to get rid of all of my equipment from my last few grows, so I'm starting from scratch.

Ordering a 1kw MH/HPS switchable ballast, along with everything else I need. Well that's not possible, but the have-to-have's. You can always "need" more!

So most likely I'll just purchase a MH bulb for the system to veg with at first. If I can somehow afford a 400w system, I'll be setting up a veg spot in the closet. Also most likely to be vertical. That set-up would then quickly be followed by an order for some autoflowering beans and a CMH bulb.. The issue with buying the 400w system is that I'd rather buy another 1kw ballast/bulb/cool tube and run stacked 1k's, allowing me to grow even more plants. Plus the 400w means additional ventilation and filters.

If I don't have the 400, I'll just veg under the 1kw MH and then when its time to 12/12 after clone cutting, I'll place the mothers under some CFL's. Either way I only intend to grow my clones out for about a week in veg, 10 days tops, so I'm not really worried too much about veg space. I can pack those in there. Plus I'll be doing a perpetual harvest.
