Wattage reccomendations?

Hey ICM, been reading up a lot lately hoping to start my first grow in the spring. I'm planning on building a 4x4x6 grow cab. I'd like to fit about 8 plants in this cab, my question is what wattage light is best for this? I'm assuming 400w is probably my best bet but I'm running on a bit of a budget. Will 250w work or not be enough light?

I'm open to suggestions regarding plant number, if 8's unrealistic for my cab size.

If budget is an issue look at getting used equipment. Some hydro stores sell refurbished gear on the cheap. I recommend looking around for bargains now. Why go for all the fancy new equipment off the bat?

I'd go with a 400 or 600 HPS for a 4x4 cab.

There are budget lights from Sunlight systems.

Sun System 2 250W (enclosed ballast) - $159.90
Sun System 2 400W (enclosed ballast) - $159.90 (don't ask me why the 250 and 400w are the same price)

Sunlight Budget Gro II 600W (remote ballast) - $199.80

These prices come from my favorite online hydro store. I don't have the luxury of local hydro stores so I am forced to go online.

Eight plants are quite reasonable as long as you keep their size under control. Grow bags are great for when space is at a premium.

if you cooltube and have a good fan with a remote ballast you can get away with a 1000w in 4x4..........as i was told?

You might end up bleaching your plants from too much light.

I would not go over 60w per square foot.

Your room is 16 sqft (4x4).

400w is minimum (25w/sqft)
640w is optimal (40w/sqft)
960w is maximum(60w/sqft).

This is what I was taught back when Overgrow was still around. I'd go with the 600 w/ air cooled hood, maybe a couple extra CFLs for side lighting to supplement some blue spectrum.
