Cannabis Grower Ordered to Pay $18,000 For Stolen Electricity

Crime does not pay! A San Diego man has been ordered to pay $18,000 to San Diego Gas & Electric for electricity he used for his grow rooms over the course of three years. Yeng Vang, 23, of La Mesa was also sentenced to 60 months in custody and five years of supervised release for the theft.

He was arrested and charged with growing marijuana illegally (he had 200 plants at the time) after the fire department came to put out a fire caused by a faulty grow lamp. But this sentence was solely based on the electricity theft.

yeah we had a couple of grows busted in my area, asian gangs were committing mortgage fraud and buying up houses, then they were filling up the houses with lights and stealing electricity.

Not even close, the attitude they have is run shit for as cheap as you can and as big as you can, and let the cash flow in and not loose assets over getting busted. Time is money and growers can be replaced if they go to jail. This case probably isn't gang related, sounds like some Asian dude who doesn't know theft over $5000 lands you in jail for awhile.

What happens if your grow accidently lights up? Something random happens bulbs burst room goes up in flames and burns your neighbors home down. Should you go to jail for 10 years?

There's a big diiferance in someone that is a responsible grower. If my grow caught fire for a Faulty lamp I have home owners insurance that will cover the cost. If you don't have home owners Insurance is just stupid. If your a renter you can still get renters insurance. That Guy is a thief and would care less if he burned down any one's home.

And if I had a neighbor that was growing weed and stealing electricity and putting people in the area, including me in danger, then I would report his ass and make sure that he got busted.

Just because somebody grows weed, that doesn't give them a pass, or make them cool in my book. A dickhead is still a dickhead, weed or no weed. There's a right way to do things and there's the dickhead way.

Everyone assumes people are "stealing" power so they dont have to pay the bill, but in reality, while I cant speak for everyone, im sure most of these people are stealing electricity in efforts to stay OFF the radar...unfortunately, he chose the wrong way to do things..

you act like stealing electricity is the worst thing in the world. while I would never do it, electricity companies on the west coast are RAPING there customers, growers or not, electricity is through the fucking roof.. Power companies are making insane amounts of money right now..

but none the less, stealing is stealing, and will always be frowned upon, as it should be..
