peat pots or jiffy 7s

I root my clones in peat pots with great success. I was wondering what most people do with the mesh that holds the peat pot together. Ive read some people tear it off and others let the roots grow through it. Any opinions or thoughts on this folks ??

Thanx, te lilman

I foumd making the least barriers for the roots the best bet. also, when watering the peat pot even after a while it will turn soft, the first couple weeks acts as a dam to the rest of the soil some times causing a wet spot in the middle which can mold the stslk. I speak from exp.

Paper covered pellets disintegrate, the plastic ones always leave bits of mesh in the soil which may or may not be a concern for you.

I have never had an issue with the plastic ones, but I went with paper as it means I've less to pick out when I reuse soil.

I think I was confusing the starter peat pellets for the actual little peat pots that you fill with soil. Sorry, my bad. If your talking of the seed starter plugs then I wouln;t worry, the roots go through them like nothing. The prob I had was with the compressed peat pots. It seemed they grew much betterin them due to mor air to the roots, but when transplanting into the new bigger pots, you need to peel off the wet peat pot very carefully and then transplant. You are probably going to hear a few roots tear, but not enough to cause any shock or harm. I guarantee though they make the plants grow twice the speed as if using the old beer cup or green pot method.

I clone in the 7's (I think) where there is mesh around the plug after it expands. I never removed the mesh before transplanting and had no problems at all.

i myself never remove the mesh

just put the whole jiffy into the mud, or into rookwool cubes. with the rookwool you have to fill the space inbetween the cube and the jiffy. for this i break abit of rookwool off the side of the cube and stuff it in there

hey quick question, is it okay to put the peat pellets right into the next pot? or should you take off the soil before transplanting? Don't see why it wouldnt be a problem to just put the peat pellet in the new pot and cover it with the new soil. Any ideas?

Yeah, just put them directly into the pot when you transplant up, you don't want to mess with the roots on a seedling, and especially not the taproot. Some people transplant the pellet and let it stick a bit up off of the soil, and others plant the pellet slightly deeper and cover it with the new soil. Both methods work. I use the second method, because I find the first method to be ugly looking.
