So I've never vegged a plant under cfl's ever (clones included), and I'm curious how long you can veg a plant before the cfl's become useless because of plant size. I hear they're perfect for clones...

once a plant is 8 inches to a foot in height the lack of penetration from cfl's usually becomes a limiting factor on growth, depending on the wattage and number of lights......:D

Interesting. Right now, I'm using CFL and Fluoros for veg myself so I'm curious to get info, opinions, and experiences on this myself.

with enough cfl's you could flower them, but you would need shit loads of the highest wattage available......they are very good at vegging, young plants imo prefer the colour spectrum to sodiums, but not as much as halides...

they are nice and cool compared to most bulbs so can be kept nearly touching the leaves..

a very prudent and economical way to veg plants.

yeah i was curious because it would be great to go from cfl veg to hps flower with the setup that im running, i also have easy access to clones to thats what i'll be growing with for a while

how many watts do normal cfls run at?

~40 watt cfl's are easy to come by at walmart, etc. They read "150 watt" or equivalent. Lowes/menards carry a 60 watt that will still fit in a normal base, its supposed to be a 300 watt equiv.

I have two CFL's that are 300w equivalent each but each only uses 42 watts. They work great for vegging at least 5 weeks, and then watch out...some strains like to show sex earlier than usual. I agree, they may only be good for vegging up to 8-9 inches, depending on how leafy the strain is. Nice and economical way to veg, though.

yeah if i dont plan on vegging for more than a month then why bother turning on the hps until im about to flower, especially since im only doing 3 plants at a time

they can last a while cfl, the energy can support to my knowledge 1st grow, 70w=18gram never fed nutes MG soil. 2 healthy size plants with nice buds

for just veg yes do it. blue spectrum right.
its smaller scale but harness your power and grow to your area potential u see good results.

a halide veg would veg out a crop with larger results

depending on the wattage and number of lights......

That is the real question. Wattage is wattage and lumens are lumens, regardless of type of light. You can have 1000 watts of fluorescents all around a plant and grow it huge, 6 feet tall if you want, it all has to do with how many lights and how they are placed....

Yes, you can absolutely veg under CFL's. I get mine at Walmart.
BE MINDFUL to get the 6500k "Daylight" ones. You can veg with other temps (kelvin's) but the 6500k are the best for vegging.

This! Then flower with HPS. Works fine. You can flower with warm spectrom CFL (I have) but the right ones (2500K) are a bit harder to find. Also yield is way better using HPS. Using CFLs the pllant must kept real close (1") from the bul(s).

Exactly how I do it, veg undeer cfl's/flower under hps.
Btw, I say get the 6500k's because my T5's veg bulbs are 6500k:biggrin:

I have Vegged 2 1/2 ft plants with cfl, then flowered them with cfl. The inter nodal spacing from veg was wonderful. All the ideal 1/2 inch apart. The cfl was great for veg, but for flowering I was only averaging 15g per plant. The picture below was vegged & flowered under cfl. Hope this helps.
