2 cooltubes.... both glass tubes are starting to crack

as the title says, I have currently 2 cool tubes (from ebay.. this could be the reason) with 1000 watt hps bulbs in each.


The first crack i noticed was after pulling it out of the shipping box so i gave the benifit of doubt to the shipping error.

Well i just went back in my room( non operational yet) and noticed the second tube has a 5" hairlines crack that appeared out of know where from the top. Leads me to think the problem is coming from else where.


Both cracks originated from the the metal couplers. Id like to fix it before it gets worse... any sorta of glass glue or ideas?

Ill post pics if it would be helpfull to anyone out there.

contact the seller and get a replacement/refund.

Fixing it now is just asking for trouble down the line... you want equipment that works right the first time. You may not think it.... but the delay will be worth it.

This is not common and is probably a defective batch of Tubes from a particular manufacturer. Contact the seller first but it wouldnt be a bad idea to email the maker and/or distributor (NGW, Sunlight Supply, etc.) about your situation so they know about it and look to remove the batch from supply.

Definitely good advice there. You'll find companies that don't care but the one's that do, greatly appreciate getting feedback. I've worked for both types of companies and much prefer the latter.

problem is fellas these were ordered over a couple months ago(sat in storage for a while before being fired up). No chance in getting a refund off ebay =/

I placed some clear glass epoxy to stop any further cracking. the tubes are secured in a manner that they wont fall apart.

Just let this be a warning and a lesson I guess. You get what you pay for!

Bought a 400w HPS eballast and a cool tube a couple years ago and the tube arrived cracked with the fracture coming from the area of the eyebolts, a call to the vendor got me another one but a day or two after making the socket switch to the new tube I noticed hairline cracks just like yours. lol...Then came across the CMH thread and the eballast is collecting dust!

Check the eye-bolts. If the nuts are a bit too tight, they can, eventually, crack the glass.
