shop vac sucks up water for about a minute and shoots it back out

so basically i have a rigid 20 gallon 6.5 hp Wet/dry vac. after about 25 days of use it has started to give me this problem where it sucks water up for about a minute and then backs a "thwoop" noise and proceeds to spit all the water it just vaccumed back into the tray.

Needless to say this si rather frustrating. Can anyone shed some light on this? it is definatley a wet vac

Hi, I believe it would be your "debris reservour" may be filling up too far. Dump the reservoir every 30 seconds or so. Check your filter, if it's clogged or dirty, take it out and clean it, or take it out completely.

Good luck!

word, i emptied it and it was still doing this on an empty tank. is there an easier way to move water or is the shop vac where its at?

i am doing coco so its basically just moving the runoff, could the fact that its not sucking a solid stream of water contribute?

Oh shitty! I have a new rigid(don't know how many gallons, I'm a girl...duh) and it's never done that before. If my man gets up outta bed soon, I'll have him stop in and see if he can help. He uses a shop vac on a daily basis at his work...don't know if it's a rigid, but our shop vac is.

make sure lid and drain plug are secure. are you sure the hose isn't clogged? turn it on,it should suck your hand tight against the hose.

That's what I would say the issue is.... There's a restriction in the suction somewhere up the hose.

Once the hose has filled up with water, there's a lot of weight pulling against the suction. If any debris hits that restriction and reduces the suction even more.... You'll get a 'Schluupp' and all the water below that restriction will dump out.

Just be careful you don't damage the hose or anything trying to clear it. :D

Do you have that cloth covering for where the filter goes? There should be one that came with the shop vac when it was new, they are usually blue. Your supposed to use them when sucking up water, or it will just shoot out of the exhaust port.

mine didnt come with one of those, but it hasn't shot anything out the exhaust port over the last month. that would be scary as fuck.

basically i went and bought a new filter and it seems to have solved the problem.

thanks guys

You are supposed to use the filter bag attachment on a shop vac while vacuuming dry particles. Take it off for wet.

nevermind, lol. glad you got it fixed. BTW, don't worry about your vac spewing water out the exhaust. Gravity prevents this from happening. The only thing that will spew out the exhaust is particles if you're running w/o the filter. Water in the bottom of the can acts like a filter itself but doesn't keep your vac from getting build up in the working end. If you operate it frequently w/o the filter, an occasional cleaning of the ball and cage should keep it running smooth.
