Cannabis-infused poteen is seized in Mallow raid (Ireland)

Gardai have uncovered a 'cottage' industry in Mallow, Co Cork, which was manufacturing cannabis-infused poteen.

The enterprising entrepreneur was also growing cannabis plants and manufacturing a range of cannabis-flavoured biscuits and butter. The biscuits, known as Marrakesh Biscuits, are apparently very popular.

The rural cottage in the townland of Glantane near Mallow was the scene of the raid last week when local gardai called around unexpectedly and made the discovery of a still and 22 cannabis plants in an upstairs loft.

Locals in Mallow, which wags have now dubbed 'Mellow', were bemused by all the fuss. "You have to hand it to the distiller. He was out trying to create a bit of industry in these lean times. The stuff was being sold locally as Creme de Grass -- I didn't drink any of it, but I heard it had quite a strange effect on the auld head if you took a drop," said one local.

Detective Sergeant Paul Reidy led the raid, which also uncovered regular dry leaf marijuana of the smoking variety. All the items seized have been sent to Garda Headquarters for analysis, explained Sgt Reidy.

The search was carried out at a house in Glantane at 7.30am on January 23. Twenty-two cannabis plants and drugs cultivation paraphernalia were found, as well as other items such as cannabis alcohol and biscuits. It was a heady mix -- A cannabis plant is worth about €400.

A local man in his mid-40s was arrested at the scene and detained in Mallow garda station. He was subsequently released and a file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecution's office, a garda spokesperson said.

poteen is some good stuff. The good kinds are 80% and smooth enough to take shots of. they make stronger but it burns to much for me to want. I like the after taste almost like a tiny hint of rum from the treacle. Vodka sucks no flavor.

to bad they got busted but poteen stills have been getting busted for eons, now they toss in a safer drug and get busted even worse.

good poteen is not like moonshine. moonshine is corn and sugar most of the time and rarely a cooked mash. Poteen is a cooked mash with lots of goodies that make it have a good taste even at a high %. There is many out there that would be considered top shelf some of which where made out of home stills. Poteen is small pot pot whiskey but since it was made legal to make again in 97 there are brands out there in the stores now. My uncles stuff amazes even critics of whiskey aficionado mag.

The most important part is the clean separation of the heads and tails.

moonshine=brick most of the time poteen=dank

sometimes if separated well some shine is ok if sour mashed but not the same taste and some yummy oat goodness

I have only been drunk a few times but have a real good nose for finding stuff that should not be in a bottle. I actually don't even like being drunk for more then 30 minutes and to party I prefer Ketamine.

Just long days as a kid cleaning out fermenters and sniffing/tasting outta the still. you get to really tell the tiny differences in stuff at that point.

That's a pretty chauvinistic attitude. Where do you think sourmash originated, anyway?

I'm sure there have been just as many rotgut poteens as there have been poorly distilled US moonshine.

...someone has to stand up for American moonshine...!
