So this little one seems to be stuck...any chance it will make it out before rotting in its own womb?

SO how long has it looked like this, we cannot help you unless you give us a little more info. I would not touch it with your bare hands at that age because of the proteins on you skin it can cause it to dampen off. Hard to tell you if it will come out without you telling us how long its been in, patients is always key in this game.

Most of the time when they look like this,it starts making you worry for sure. Be patient,it will swell and push off the shell most of the time. If not, some people try to remove it and either just screw it up,kill it,or it actually works. No way of really saying for sure,if it wants life it will grab it and go. Be patient first.

Well it has been over 24 hours but less than 48 hours, so I guess wait it out for a couple more days. I hope this one makes it because out of the 3 pack of Easy Ryders, this is the last one. I got an unlucky pack, they all have problems.

When my seedlings do that, I remove them gently after a couple of days - haven't killed one doing that yet, even though I've torn off a couple of cotyledons. I have had a couple get stuck in a way that required intervention to survive, so don't always assume nature will get it worked out on its own.

ericed,

I do the same as strainbrain said, he stands corrected as me do the same when the shell
gets stuck like that......
hard shells tend to do it...or awkward growth gets them caught up in not cracking smoothly.

I usually use two sewing needles /or two toothpicks.....and gently , and i mean gently removing the shell without breaking the head.

Patience...it's a growers tool...somewhere, someone wrote a very good read on developing Patience as a tool in your growing arsenal...look it up.

I have a 25+ year old strain that over the years has increased the number of very hard shelled seeds that need help. It's funny, because they probably wouldn't have survived in the wild, but with my help, the gene has increased in that line. So, in response to quite a large percentage of 'stuck' seeds that can't squeeze out of their cap, I started getting in there with various tools. Best so far is tweezer in one hand, sewing needle in the other, hold your breath!

I've thought that as well. Seems we give them everything they need and they never have to go through the natural selection process because we do it for them. Holding their hands through the tough times seems to create co-dependent children. BUT on the other hand,we are also making sure we get what we want from them. I had to do some shell surgery yesterday,I just can't recommend it to people who have not done it enough because it is a delicate operation....Brian surgery!

ive removed a few and they made it just fine. has any one ever put your beans in bowl of clorox and let them boil a second or two then pull them out and wash them in water,to clean them off.my grandfather taught me this trick with okra seeds there really hard and it softens them and they germ extra fast. a quick soaking and then plant them.

Get one of those plastic tubes with cap th@ smarties or other confectionery come in, roll a piece of sandpaper, grit inwards, and slide it into the tube...let/help it expand and unroll...place seeds in container, seal lid and shake!...or you could use a matchbox and sandpaper...this scarifies the seeds...creating area's th@ the water can get in...sometimes putting them in a cup of boiling water from the kettle can help also...
But scarification and steeping in water is ya best bet...
