How many watts HPS do I need to grow 6 plants?

I plan to grow 6 plants with a 2-2.5 month veg time. I was wondering how many watts using a HPS it would require?

A better way to go about this might be to first determine how much space you have . . . in square feet.

You could grow 6 plants under a 400, but there other factors to consider.

Are you growing in soil?

What strain?

What is the space of your area?

What type of ventilation do/would you have?

Is this your first grow?

I am growing Platinum OG and Blue Dream from cuttings. I plan to do a half/half grow. I know that platinum OG is better with space then blue dream (BD seems to be a monster).

From the responses it sounds like I would need +2k watts? I was hoping I could get away with 1200watts (2x600s).

If you plan on vegging that long, you're going to have to have at least a 600 per plant. If not a 1k. Or some sort of vertical lighting setup. Or some light movers.

Sounds like you might be a Colorado med patient? Or maybe not. Either way, those will be some really big plants. I can get two foot tall plants within a month, and that's topped. You might have to make sure you have high enough ceilings, depending on your strains stretch.

600 watts per plant? That seems excessive. After 1 month of veg I usually have about 8 nodes, but my plants are only 6 inches tall, I can keep my 400 watt light 1 inch from the canopy. After 2 months I can keep em to about 18 - 20". They finish around 2.5 - 3 feet.

Again I can flower 6 plants under a 400 watt light if they're trained, but a 600 watt lamp might do you better. You could go more, but more needs to be known about your setup, ESPECIALLY ventilation.

What is the space of your room?

What kind of ventilation do you have?

Those are equally important factors.

After a month of veg I can only fit four per 1k in 5 gal, comfortably.
Maybe 6-9 in an emergency. But if you're looking to get the most out of only 6 plants, the more light, the better. If you want to use two 600s, you could just have two rows of three plants. And drop a vertical cool tube in between each row. If that makes any sense. You could get some pretty impressive numbers with that scenario.

Are your plants in 5 gallon containers at the end of one month veg? Is there a reason you veg em in 5 gallons containers?

I can veg to a month (currently am in fact) in 1.75 gallon containers and I'd say I can let em go another 2 weeks before transplant without issues. Only drawback is i must water every 48 hours by the end of 6 weeks.

I agree the more light the better, but only up to a point. Meaning more light is too arbitrary, we need to know the size of the space so we can determine how the light is being distributed.

6 plants in a 3' x 2' will require less light than 6 plants in a 3' x 3', et cetera. And equally important to lighting is maintaining an otherwise optimal environment by keeping temps in check at the canopy, which is again why grow room area and ventilation are pinnacle.

Plus factoring in the numerous ways to train plants, SOG, ScROG, LST, a plant count isn't sufficient information to determine lighting requirements.

I hope the OP comes back and fills in the details :)

Put as much light as you can keep cool. 6 plants is fine under 1000w tho. if you can keep 2000w cool do it, but 4- 600w'ers is less power consumption than 2- 1000w'ers
or 2- 600w bulbs is cheaper than 1- 1000w bulb

I would be running 1-2 can fans through cool tubes for ventilation.

sound to me that this is going to be your first time, my suggesting is to go with a 150w or even a 250w then upgrade to a higher wattage once you dial in your grow setup,
for example you need to control your feeding "what kind of nutes you going to use and figure out the mix", ventilation, what kind of medium you are going to use , what kind of filtration system you using for the smell . here are some of my boy johnny 150w on a TRACK SYSTEM grow back in the 80's.

This is the second time. First was 6 plants with a 600watt and about a 2wk veg (Seemed to work out very well). I was unsure given 2 months more veg how big the plants would get and their footprint.
