SOUR DIESEL QUESTION

SergeantGod

Member
My veg sour diesels (first time with SD) are very lanky, wide spread between nodes, and thin branches that i can't image holding up a very big bud.

My smaller ones I'm pruning, trying to make them bushier but they sure are thin branches as opposed to my other plants.

Anyone else face that?

Does it look like this?

I snapped this a few days ago. Since then she has been topped and transplanted. I have done SD a few time in the past and can tell you that she definitly requires training and/or topping.

I've worked with the SD for a few years now and it still remains my favorite strain.
She's a plant you really have to work with to keep her under control.
I heavily train my Sour Diesel clones by tying down and bending and it really keeps it managable. If you let it get out of control, the Sour D will overgrow your entire garden.

The stems will thicken up after you start training her and bending and tying down. I prefer tying and bending to topping. I've topped the Sour D before and heavy training works better for yield, for me.

Watch for stretch... stretches like fucking crazy for the first 2.5 weeks of Flowering. You gotta literally train and tie her down daily for the first 2 weeks if you don't want her to get out of control.

All of this effort and long flowering time wait, is ALL worth it, I must assure you.

I've got quite a few cycles with ECSD, and one of the ways I control that stretch is that I use SuperBud, which stops the growth and forces flowering. You'll notice the results within 3-5 days. If you don't have access to SuperBud, I've heard that BushMaster works in the same manner.
If you're unable to obtain the mentioned products, then when you start to flower ECSD, then put her out there at about 10"-12", and she'll grow to at least 3'-3'.5''.

With ECSD, I definitely have my trellis in place to help support those long lanky branches, and I'll also use the smallest bungi cords to hook stray branches to the trellis. SuperCropping (LST) is another method I use as well that will help control the rapid growth.

mmmm.... sour d.....

i highly recommend sage n sour by th seeds too if you want a little more control over your sour side. i love anything with sour d in it, but sage n sour is probably my favorite since i can't grow the original sour d

Hi All.
The Sour Diesel Clone should be flowered at 14" under 1000w lights,to finish at 3'....
If given direct light, the plant will easily support its' buds....

Also....
Sage n' Sour dilutes the Sour Diesel genes WAY too much-and not for the better,imVho....

The ECSD start gently to form his floral structure before rush on, it follow it's sativa temperament in stretch and branching (so hormonally).

The 20 first days of flowering photoperiod are boring, and you can start to be affraid to don't see any flower coming if you don't have a nuclear plant in the garden. The youngs grows are dispatched along a stretchy trunk and the branching very flexible (if trained its more apparent), it's when you say : wtf bro' ? It's that ?

After one month later the ladies start truly the show and smell like the hell's kitchen. You're like a chicken without his head running everywhere for control the odor or decrease the population in flowering period. But you're happy, i must be honest.
The trichomes production follow without PK and permit you to preserve more the final taste, apply it more mature.

More seriously, the little grows transform itselves in little buds very vigorous and allready "coded by the gens" (sorry, no english term in mind) for adopt very quickly a generous floral method : the wheat disposition with big calyxes.
It's generally reserved to the end of flowering, all strains considered for the ones who push far theyr plants. I think it's "her" little secret for be so generous.

From this step the baby answer very well to flowering components, and near to each day you discover new future grammers on the plants. At the end of the flowering stage you understand all the utility of the spaced nodes and the big trunk. For me it's a SOG muscle car, or a big tree obesity. A cut of extrems lol

Genetically it's a bitch breeded for the female's floral qualities. Sincerely, even with an afghani#1 or recessive NL#5... a true bitch.

My feedback on it is finally the choose to hack the cut differently, and more focused on the possible male heritage than the cut can provide, for a project wich need vigor/yield/top nutrients assimilation. (a nice SSH, i love to smoke this diamond but i hate to grow it)

I've choosen an Afghani/Skunk/BB mild as male, and it's when you can verify than the dominance can be independant on the sex for some traits. The male outcross passed what was expected, without manifesting any ECSD expression in females in floral but in passing the main traits benefits to the vegetal basis : yield, vigor, calyx density etc..

Now i'm far from the P1 lol, and the hybrid i aim have nothing to have truly with the ECSD. But without this female/male switch at the start, i sincerely don't have an idea of what other male basis to use for the SSH now.

So, lanky branchs yes but not lanky strain even in exotic ways. For me she's a very interresting choice for don't be enslavered under the skunk males or the BigBudxSkunk males for boost up a selection.

The outcross is easy to do if you don't focus on the original smoke, i mean all the general traits are dominant, except buds yes.

I hope it will help somes to drive this baby if recent in theyr crop.

I grow several phenos of sour deisel and I like to put them in flower early and small (less than 24") as it stretches like you wouldn't believe (put in at 26" and now about 6' and 8 weeks in). I'm a week out from harvesting 2 and one of them has almost fallen over from the weight of buds. If space and smell are a problem then I don't really reccomend growing this strain. During the last week or so of flowering it likes to foxtail and add on weight on one of my phenos, lots of little buds everywhere, no really big main colas on one pheno, but another pheno has very different bud structure and leaves (yet very similar to each other, you can see similarieties) and didn't stretch monstorously like my other pheno.. so really it can go either way. It changes if you grow from seed or clone in my opinion also, even from the same genetics my buds will grow out a little differently each time I grow them out and I take cuts from my moms. Ok stoney rambling smoking some golden goat, so I probably didn't really answer any type of question.

Flower them small

Flower them small

I agree witht he tip of flowering them small. I flowered at 8" or about 2 weeks after rooting and they finished around 2.5 -3 ft .The yield was OK, and the herb was great. She's a columnar plant if you flower her small and only grow her it is easy--more difficult to deal with light issues if you grow sOur D with other strains

Please don't do this and sell it. If you don't mind harming yourself, that's one thing, but if you sell yhat to a 24/7 med user like myself... I consider that criminal.

In the quantity I use to survive daily.... ANY contaminant, no matter how small, becomes a large issue quite quickly. Please find non man-made ways to control stretch.

Sour Diesel clone is a bit finicky to grow and not the sturdiest plant either. But Rez Sour diesel ibl has everything you want from the SD clone but it's way easier to grow and more stable with much less stretching. I ran the crop from these pictures with no topping and light bending, just let them go natural to see how they grow. I think there were 17 in the room that crop. With a short veg time they were sturdy uniform plants with tight node spacing. No staking required although I staked some anyway. The next run I vegged longer in bigger containers and topped. Got over 5 ounces on the bigger ones. They can be fed pretty hard although I did over do it slightly more then once. I lost my moms and can't wait to pop my new pack of Rez Sour diesel. One of my all time favorite for sure.
I notice people saying the high is short lived. I don't choose strains for how high I get, I choose them for what kind of a high I get and I find SD to be one of the most balanced highs I've found, representing a bit of every spectrum of cannabis.

Sour seed

Here is my mom I just started from a seed I found in a bag of fire organic SD. It's healthy, but looks like a stretcher. I topped it once about a week ago, and about to take about 12 babies off.

LOOKING GOOD BRO!

LOOKING GOOD BRO!

I think they might mean just that bro! No probs though, just buy some wire mesh fencing, nail it to a square frame, put the frame at a decent height and work the branches to a lower-you might find that you will yield even more. Hope this helped...

Here is some inspiration for you from VerdantGreens SCROG post:
