Home made DWC clone set up

Hi

Ok a friend sent me these fotos, she watched this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yy5kJwdMv8&feature=related and using rock-wool instead of STG (used int the YT video) her BF built this system and i want to ask your opinions and advise about it.,

-They used a storage container,
-Cut out square areas for the Rock-Wool,
-Drilled hole on the corner for the air-pump tube,
-Filled it up with water, Canna Nutrients,
-Added 2 Long Air Stones
-Conncted a Dual Airflow airpump with 2 long airstones,
-Added a set of 16 clones.

The set up lives inside a Homebox XS with a 200watt Flo

Any advise appreciated.

i'd be worried about the rockwool staying too wet. with the stems dipped down into the bubbling water, all you are using the rockwool for is to hold the plant there. it may be doing more harm than good. RW needs wet/dry periods.

i'd try just using the rockwool (not sticking stems all the way through, letting it dry out a little) or finding another way to hold the clones in the bubbler. or try all three and see what works best!

what you mean by all 3?

btw the rock wool only got wet at the bottom and so she dipped them into the PH'ed water before placing the clones in., more then the top was dry she said, you think stopping the bubler from time to time is a good idea even thought the stems are in the water a bit?

If your going to keep knocking the bubbler off from time to time, (which defeats the object,) you may as well just hand water the rockwool, and forget the bubbler, me thinks!

My advice, go buy some EZ cloner pucks or a pool noodle. They do not hold water like rockwool. Freezerboy has a similar set up as you, might be a good idea to check his out or wait until he chimes in. He uses rockwool also, and if you keep it too wet you will fail. Good luck!!!

My version uses 100% saturation at all times. Water delivers oxygen. No saturation, no air; The slip suffocates, dries up and dies. I never had any luck with exposed stems, I keep mine inside the rockwool and the waterline about 1/2 inch below the cubes so they remain dripping wet 24/7. My biggest jump in success came from soaking stems in Hormex for one minute prior to gel and cube.

Note that a 1" square is larger than a 1" hole. Unless you have some sort of punch, round holes are much easier to make and lock cubes securely, preventing them from slipping into the tub.

Oh, the little white diffusers in shot 3? They were awful. I'll never buy that type again.

ok again, i tell them to not let the stems stick out, i mean in the water a bit as they said, mentioned above.. basically the rockwool will absorb water from the bubbles and humidity right?

In the water is fine but, DO comes from surface turbulence. The more cubes in the water, the less surface. Less surface=less surface turbulence and thus less DO. Enough less to matter? I don't know but, dropping the waterline 1/4"-1/2" maximizes the surface while keeping cubes within range of the bubbles.

This works somewhat opposite to E&F where gravity pulls water down through the cube which pulls air in after it. Here, water can only escape upwards through evaporation. As it evaporates up, it's replaced by new DO infused water below.

Thanks for your post, i checked out other people's home made projects (as in my signature) so what makes you think it is a advertisement?
