Grow tracking software - what would YOU like to see?

Well, for my 2000th icmag post (PARTYYY! lol) I'm contemplating writing some software to enable growers to make tracking their grows easier, but i feel it's important to get some thoughts from others here before even starting this because every grower is different and has different needs ...

- Everybody has different setups and will want to keep track of some things while not having to worry about others.

- Some will want a more flexible-but-complex system, while others would want it kept as simple as possible (the idea afterall is to make things easier for the grower).

- Some people grow outdoors and fly by the sun, others grow indoors with their own custom lighting schedule.

- Some indoor growers have just 1 chamber and use that to alternate between veg and flower, others have 2 chambers, others have more, many more in some cases.

- Some people just grow one or two plants, others grow a dozen, some grow hundreds.

etc etc!

In other words, I will have to design a lot of flexibility into this program.

SO! What features would you like to see, and what things are you interested in taking note of/tracking from your grows (and likewise what you aren't interested in)?

And please specify if you're an outdoor or indoor grower! I'm especially interested to hear from outdoor growers because I never grow outdoors, whereas I've got a pretty good idea about what indoor growers want to track.

The software obviously doesn't "track the growth of a plant" per se as if it were plugged into a plant, but allows you to keep track of things such as what date you started a strain, how long you vegged it for, when you started flowering it, and so on.

I really don't want any kind of incriminating evidence on my computers. Maybe it should be something that has very strong encryption, and deletes and overwrites itself after three wrong login attempts.

At the start of flower I always record..

Date
Strain
Overall Height
Training Method
Room Temperature/Humidity
Ferts
EC/PH
Feeding Method/Times
Overall Plant Condition
Preflower Pictures of canopy and stem

After that I just take notes if there are changes to any of these metrics. If it's a new strain I pay attention to things like bud structure, over/under fert, leaf condition, etc.

Veg: Light cycle
Name, seed start date, Days to show sex, Sex, Dialog box for veg characteristics.

Flowering:
Name, Start Date, Start Height, Days in stretch, Finish Height, Flower Boost, Flush, Days to 100% Cloudy, Days till X% amber, yeild per plant(maybe have an average calculator)

ec and ph, what nutes @ what ratio.

My perfect computer grow program:
I would like to put all my supplies in a pile, with genetics on the top. Set my laptop next to the pile and come back in 2-3 months with everything ready to be dried.

If you design a program to do that.........I will buy it.

Yes it will be easy to implement optional, strong encryption @ 128-256bit (some people may want the data stored as text files that can easily be manipulated with text editors, whereas others will simply want everything encrypted, and I can easily and securely cater for both). Likewise it will be easy to implement an optional password-protected login, and yes even include an optional "Delete all data after x failed login attempts" feature.

Actually I won't even be calling the program anything cannabis-related, I've come up with a name for it already and it's just a generic plant growing kinda name (albeit the program is designed purely from a cannabis-growing perspective).

lol, I'm flattered but PlantStat is about as flexible as a pre-nup ... I designed it purely for my small two-chamber setup, and it features everything I need and nothing I don't. But when you realise how everybodys setups are different, and growing indoors vs outdoors and so on, such a program in order to become usable by most people needs to become a lot more flexible (while at the same time keeping it practical and easy to use). Tricky.

great Idea, I made something similar to this, however it needs a pen and some paper, have an excell thing I made and print, but I like where this is going and don't the c++ skills yet to make it into something, good luck with this.

How about self hosting your own mini forum, you can use the calender to store info, posts/theards to complie info, then you have your own stored grow log with pics and you can do what you will with it.

Still though, I like your idea of a lil program, keep it on one of those thumbsticks that when you use wrong password a few times it leaks this epoxy stuff inside and trashes everything.

Secure vs. 10 year old is easy, secure vs. LEO is very hard. Assume that anything stored on the computer can be recovered by a determined adversary, particularly if you're using somebody's homebrew software. Truecrypt I would trust, this I would not.

I like the idea of tracking software though, it's just not something I would use.

criteria: secure code to enter app maybe alphanumeric. Folders for different strains, see "awesome notes" app and get the idea. but then have a basic layout in the folders which include all needed info for you to fill out...

Maybe you can even do a folder option for each folder so thatyou can check off the info you want IN each folder.

for example
Folder Name= veg
folder Name= mums
Folder name=tent or room 1 flower
folder name= flower room 2.

so in veg, you only realy need whos vegging and dates and what not

Mums you need names and last feeding and what fed.

room one you may need PH and EC and Dates and PKboost dates

room 2 you may need some other shit....

if you can customize each folder so that only the stuff needed in each folder shows up to fill out.

I want to be on a ski lift and know that everything is on and working. Temps, CO2, ie all controls. I want to be called if my temp goes to high or low, and if there is a power outage.
I want to be able to view all info room by room. Maybe even access to the cameras from my phone. I know its a lot, but damn could I sleep better.

And make it easy to download pics and sort them easily into the proper room/file.

In addition to everything else mentioned.

I know shit in one hand , wish in the other. See which fills up first. But I did have a set up like this in my glass blowing shop.

it's cool you're doing this, i can see this helping out a huge chunk of folks

at the same time, i can't help but think that all of this can be done in excel, well aside from what LIFEISGOOD is asking for hehe

edit - this has gotten me to make my own in excel, lots of good ideas for what to track in this thread
