The Harsh Reality??? (Pipe Question)

I've always pondered the question as to why some pipes and bongs are regarded as harsh. They might not toke well because of the physical difference, the distance between the bowl and your mouth, the shape and direction of the hole, the carb, etc.

But, why is the 'pipe' harsh? No matter the chronic you always cough on some pipes. But why is this, is it merely psychological?
I know people who have pipes and bongs(duh), some of which are a harsh smoke, no matter the dope you put in it. Resistance with anything else doesn't make me cough.

Can anyone answer why some pipes are harsh?

.... Never experienced this variation in pipes, but I know pipes with shorter distance from bowl to mouth are sometimes hotter smoke because the distance the smoke travels allows it to cool.

Im not a fan of pipes, i always tend to get a hit of gas from the lighter wich is never good! The smoke is too hot aswell

Some bowls, pipes etc. design (besides volume etc.) may facilitate the burning of built up resin or may not catch ash as well? I don't really know but I understand what your getting at, I have this one pipe that I don't use anymore because even when I clean it the smoke seems really "harsh".

Physics...the volume of the hit, the length of time it has to cool before it hits your throat, how it hits your throat, the velocity that it generally hits at...

Yeah my friend use to have a very expensive saxophone shaped thing, it was a pretty decent size and was some high quality glass, the thing produced the most dry harsh smoke, i never knew why

I only put enough bud/hash for 1 hit that I am comfortable with. Don't smoke baccy but occasionally the odd pure spliff. Took some time getting used to me pipe and I thought it a waste of time coughing up the smoke, but now I've got it sorted....a little at a time.

I used to think the same thing. How come this pipe hits better than that pipe? Or why does one of my boys pipe KILL MY THROAT and the other guys pipe I want to take home with me?

The thing about cheap (and not so cheap) colored glass pipes: if you torch it well - it burns some paint :x had like 3 spoons in my life and all of them gave out toxic paint smell :S

I agree - It's weird. However, it's gotta be a combo of materials used to make the pipe, length for smoke to travel, size hit and most importantly quality of herb..

I usually either vape or roll a joint but when do smoke outta a pipe, it's usually just enough herb packed in for one or two hits and out of soapstone - (Meerschaum-see pics). I quit using glass a while back.

There is still nothing wrong with a good bong hit now and then....

Pics are almost six years old. I have quite a few more meerschaums now but too lazy to get them all out.. LOL

I find the more res, the harsher... A clean pipe is always smooth (somewhat)

Other than that you just gotta get used to the pipe. Keep smoking.

Did they say made in China on the bottom? A quality glass pipe does not do that.

i use a good quality glass pipe. It's very short but I never cough. I find if you only draw back lightly and slowly the smoke is fine. When friends use it they draw back like its a bong and cough their guts out.

It's all in the technique.

I think its down to what you are smoking most of the time. I have a £300 bong & sometimes i cough a lung up when i use it.

Metal always tastes bad, some glass does too. Wood is OK, but results vary. The best smoke is from horn and cob. That's right, deer horn or corn cob, both smoke cool and tasty. I add a straw to my corn cob to make a modified churchwarden, and it smokes as cool as a hobbit.

I think the longer you hold the flame on the weed, the harsher the hit. The dryer the weed, the harsher the smoke. I think harshness differs only slightly from pipe to pipe though.

some pipes are heavy hitters and although the hit you get might be
quite profound it doesn't necessarily make it harsh, just heavy imo.
try putting an extra screen or two into the bottom of a heavy hittin'
pipe to slow down the draw.......

I personally prefer glass, but I figure it's the physics, but everyone is different??? Some people claim that it's the best toke of their life, while even roasting the same bowl, others claim that it's harsh as ass. Thanks guys .
