i have the piece of shit canon.. the printer itself is now 55$ to buy, and to buy colour/black ink costs 57$.. I don't get how its cheaper to buy a printer that comes with ink than to buy the replacement ink for said printer

toners are a powder so they will not dry up. They are also good for thousands of pages. If you use ink jet and don't print alot, at least once a week just print a random page of anything to keep the ink from drying up while not in use.

This is where most companies get ya...Lexmark, HP etc don't really make their money on the printers. They make their money off the cartridges. I know of some Lexmark models where it will cost you $80 to get replacement black and replacement colour. This is also why those companies are trying to change their cartridge designs so it isn't possible to refill them.

Maybe I need to look for a company that puts guarantees on their cartridges.........

Yeah, I'm sure you are right sam.

So, it looks like Epsom ink jets are the most recommended, followed by Cannon.

I've also been told that Laser printers don't do photos as well as ink jets, is that true?

Searches for toner printers didn't really turn up much, except for laser printers, are all toner printers also laser printers?

My gf's mom has an HP printer that still uses refillable cartridges. My gf's printer uses non-refillable cartridges, is only 2 1/2 years old, and is a Lexmark.

I don't see why they should use non-refillable cartridges. That would make more waste. But they are only in it for the money as usual.

You realize you're shooting yourself in the foot when you find out that the ink cartridge that comes with the printer isn't even close to a 'full' one.

Buy one real cartridge and prove it to yourself. Lasts about 3-4 times as long as the one in a new printer.

The company makes money from selling you ink... not the printer.

Not all printers come with 'starter cartridges'.

Not shooting myself in the foot, it's much cheaper in the long run. You are correct, the company makes it's money selling repeat cartridges, exactly why I buy a new printer every time my old ink cartridge fails. Point of interest may be that I do very little physical printing anymore. Someone that's killing multiple trees every month might not find the time shopping for a new clearance printer worthwhile, but I sure do.

I had a printer just go bunk on me that was pretty decent, a standard HP. The real awesome part of it was getting all my ink refilled for $20.00 plus tax canadian at this store in the mall that refills them cheap. I was able to get 10 refills out of 1 before it died, and my 2nd cartridge died on the 4th refill.
I print a ton of stuff, and it's backing up since im too lazy to buy another printer.

Toner is like the ink for a laser printer. It is electrically charged to stick to the paper and get burnt on. Toner cartridges are more expensive than most ink cartridges, but do last longer. Most of your office copiers & such are laser units now. There are color laser printers, but they have 3 more toner cartridges than a standard black/greyscale unit does. When I was in the market awhile ago, I got the black & white version for simplicity and longevity. One cartridge for $85 brand name or 2 of online knock-offs for the same dough. Yield about 7 reams of paper per cartridge on the high res setting, more on econo mode.
That is my experience after previously owning 6 @#$%^&*! inkjets.
Best of luck to ya. Either way, you can save some for later viewing, hehe :)

I worked at HP for 30 years - at the division that developed inkjet. I was able to try every printer that hp produced. When I got to the 9872C, I stopped trying other printers. That was 1998 and I'm still using the same printer - it retired with me.
This "business" printer produces excellent 8x10 photos. It runs almost silently. It uses larger ink cartridges - not the little ones that hold about 2 tablespoons of ink.
I bought one for a friend for under $100 from Costco. I would buy one for me again, if my current one ever dies.
I NEVER buy HP ink cartridges. Most of the earlier printers and cartridges are way over engineered. Refilled cartridges will work fine and last as long as OEM.

i got to use the very first xerox laser printer when i was staff at stanford ai at the dawn of the arpanet ... the quality (compared to a line printer) was awesome. Then the first HP Deskjet came out -- again, awesome (unless the ink got wet). Then HP patented a molecule and the ink was waterproof.

but the story i love best about HP was in the beginning they had one guy working part time on ink. Last i heard they spend $1B per year just on research.

Do note that "companies TRYING to get you by the balls" is a thing of the past. Yes..Nowadays ..from what I've read anyway..most inkjet cartridges have little microcontrollers in them, that makes them expire after a preset amount of time..meaning, the printer will just refuse to use that cartridge, regardless of how full it is.

That right there is probably a substantial addition the the cost of cartridges

Ive had my HP photosmart printer for over 4 years and its a beast
agreed, I've owned, used and abused in a high dust area my HP photosmart 1215 printer for 7 or 8 years now, bullet proof, cartridges are high priced though.

I was thinking of going with one of the new Kodak printers w/the $25 ink cartridge pricing which is promised to go farther than other printers too.......

Not quite true. Cartridges can't "expire". The ink can and will dry out if not used, but what you are reffering to are "Shut off chips". Most companies are now putting little chips on the cartridges. The purpose of this is...when the cartridge gets empty, the chip will record that the cartridge is empty and if you try to refill the cartridge, it will take the ink but won't let you print because the chip will still read the cartridge as empty even if it is full. Some companies chips will also off set if you so much as take them out of the printer. There are ways to trick chips and there are chip resetters if you know where to look.
