I got a stealth wireless 3g broadband laptop stashed in my grow room...

And i got a video camera that got motion activation....

As soon as someone enter the place/starts hoovering around - it starts recording videos ... on my laptop...

What i would love to implement is some kind of program, which automaticly emails/uploads vids on the interenet so that

1. i can access it from anywhere

2. so that if laptop get stollen, a copy remains online

Any ideas?

wish i had something like your setup for my garage. would eliminate suspicion/uncertainty of "sneak & peek" warrants. have come home & found padlock unhooked before..."didn't i snap that shut??? DAMN!..." :dunno:

Only problem I have with grow room surveillance, especially in your case where the computer/recording device is stored with the grow, is if you are busted, they are going to confiscate the laptop. When they forensically analyze it, they will have video evidence of you lallygagging around your grow every day, possibly even charge you extra for plants on the video that were harvested prior to the bust, they will extract everything they can out of the video to work against you.

If there IS something on it to work FOR you like them trespassing to get a warrant like armedhippy said, you can be sure they will quickly "lose" that part of the video.

I have a 24/7 web cam setup. The video view include a temperature gauge for informational purposes also. We run a Snow Leopard server for multiple businesses over a dedicated ip. FIOS powered and the connection is extremely fast. And easy to login and view real time video with my iPhone
But due to recent dns attacks on my server I have disabled my camera until I figure out where the attacks are originating from.
Be careful out there.

Oh yeah - the server is offsite. DNS attacks have ceased and now i can check the girls with my iPhone again

If all the recording is kept off site and with the right degree of security, you might be about to mostly mitigate the security downside of this idea.

i have thought about video myself, but in a bit of a different context
that is recording any intrusion, such as LEO that might decide he could come into my home without warrant
or that he claimed i gave him permission

Yea dude, thats what i said

i need a program than uploads videos on the internet so even if someone takes my laptop - vids are already online under password, safe and sound

can't give you a name, but there are plenty
stream your video right up to an internet server
i think i've seen mention some do it to a gmail account

I'm thinking there's gotta be a way to do this...

I know for specific back up programs you can set it to "backup to external HD/server" every X amount of minutes. I don't know if there's an option like this in your web cam security program (whatever you use). If you save the video to a specific drive on your laptop maybe you could back those files up (using a 3rd party back up program) every X amount of minutes.

A quick google search pulled up this...

FTP backup software for remote backup. If you are searching for a utility capable of storing your PC backups remotely, Handy Backup will be your best choice. Handy Backup is an easy-to-use backup software that supports almost every kind of storage media, including FTP and SFTP servers. Advanced transfer engine allows backing up data from behind an FTP or even SOCKS5/SOCKS4 proxy servers.

If you look around I'm sure you can find something that suits your needs.

I would set it up to SMS my cell phone if it started recording movement, then I could go to an internet cafe and check it.

Something I've thought about - really thinking best way to do it might be not to store it on the local drive or on the internet for that matter... Use a linux based client - encrypt and password it up the arse; VPN to a safe server in a remote location (also encrypted drives). I'd want some kind of cellphone accessible self destruct/overwrite the drive on both...

If you're wondering about the linux part - LEOs aren't likely knowledgeable in unix based systems... Especially if you leave out the X/xfree etc - so it's all command line interface... Probably wouldn't even be able to shut it down :)

That was just off the top of my head at a ridiculous hour of the morning... Lets expand that a bit...

Use a netbook as your camera interface; running linux... Probably have to do a custom build / install - as you're going to want to recompile the kernel with cryptfs - so the primary partition is encrypted. Avoid any GUI installation; use hardcore passwords (y'know the ones those annoying password generators use). I'd highly recommend you edit /etc/inittab and revise ctrlaltdel - have it run a script - so it looks like the computers shutting down; have it instead initiate wipe (then don't forget you've done that). That way if LEO finds it - can't figure out how to shutdown (remember no GUI) - they're probably going to do it for you...

You're going to want setup openswan - a nice encrypted VPN network... Avoids ya those headaches of packet sniffing etc if you're really a target...

Server - gotta be offsite, preferably different continent... Somewhere you know it's gonna be a BIG hassle for your LEO to get a warrant / local co-operation (think of it this way - buying yourself time) Again, similar setup to above, you want it setup as a LAMP server. Look for a dedicated server, doesn't need to be a high end /power / etc server, doesn't take much to store/play videos; pretty sure you could run it with another netbook quite honestly...

Both computers - you want a little command line program called wipe installed. Basically one of those nice little programs that overwrites your partition with garbage...

I'm kinda torn on this one - the webcam server - you DEFINITELY want logs to /dev/null (ie no logs kept - whatsoever) the server however - Tempting to keep em; at least for a few hours - I'd want to know if someone else was trying to connect to it...

Trying to find an easy answer for a remote initiation of wipe... You want it to be SECURE, but also readily available - something you can initiate from just about anywhere with network access (from public library to cellphone to ???) so no vpns, ssh, telnets etc... Web or email based makes most sense... Web is relatively easy - but not so secure... I see lots of security issues regarding remote initiation of scripts/programs via sendmail - so its gotta be possible - but perhaps I don't have the right hacker braincells :joint:

imho, i wouldnt put any cameras in a sensitive area that will cause you so much stress re: getting hacked or having evidence on a silver platter for leo. you only need the cameras to see if ppl are snooping/casing around your place and or breaking in...... you need to be alerted and have picture/video evidence if this happens correct? to see if it is someone you know etc.

This is what i am using www.247ecam.com i am copying from their site what it does, it monitors up to 15 zones with wireless pir sensors, photo sensors, magnetic door sensors, smoke detectors, gas leak, water leak. if any are triggered, it will send you an sms within seconds and follow up with anywhere from 1 to 8 pictures. it was a little pricey, but its so simple and all wireless. i do recommend it as it has made my life simpler and more techy.

sry deaner, i meant to pm it to you awhile back, but now there are several threads regarding camera surveillance so i posted it here, ive been afk awhile :p
