Well have been thinking about this for a while, planning a dual cabinet, 150 watt cfl on one side for veg and clone. 250 watt cfl or hps on the other for flower. Cabinet is about 60x120x180 cooled by pc fans (maybe slienX). Hoping to make it pretty low key for a permanent supply. If i buy the cfl I will drop it between 2-3 plants the hps would be mounted on the top and the plants stretched sideways. The cfl i have been looking at is rated at 19500 lumens the hps at 26000. Any advice appreciated. Cheers all.

the big watt cfl bulbs arent that good, for the light they output and mainly for their price. if you go with 10 42 watts, thats better. Also that will be more evenly spread through grow area

This is true, and also the CFL's will put out more usable light than the hps. And with cfl's you can put in a couple of daylight in the mix for a better overall spectrum, i've found crystal production and bud formation greatly improve with a wider spectrum during flowering. i'd go with 4 warm white 42 watters and 2 daylight or cool white giving you a total of 252 watts.. just a thought.

Thank you for your advice, I already have 4 white 45w cfls for the veg/clone area, where i live its hard to buy 45 watt warm cfls.
Here are some details of the 250 watt bulb i was looking at,

250w RED Spectrum 8U 2700K E40 CFL Grow Light Bulb. 240V.
THIS IS AN 8U BULB WITH 19500 LUMENS.
Standard E40 screw fitting bulb.
High Lumen output 19500.
Low running costs.
100% correct PAR

Thanks all.

Dont be cheap spend the extra money and get an HPS, you'll be kicking yourself for going with the floros. good results can be had using cfls but theyre alot more work, you have to train the shit out of you plants, they have to be wicked short, and the light penetration isnt as good as the hps. A 250 isnt really that hard to cool, 1 4" fan will pretty much keep it perfect temp.

Just make sure you can account for exhaust ventilation with a HPS.

I agree...

cheap 150w HPS at www.farmtek.com

HPS is the way to go re/ flowering. The CFL's are GREAT for veg.

Yeah i was leaning towards hps. Btw I live in NZ so a lot of resources aren't available to me here. The cheapest 250 hps is about $200 with 400's being cheaper (more popular I guess). But I want a smaller system then a 400. I am planning a perpetual grow, taking clones from the vegging plants every 2 months before I put them on flower. Anyway thanks for your advice all.
