Is Pure Northern Lights a true IBL?

You might say that it depends on the breeder and that may be true, however, I've never actually seen or heard anyone mention NL IBL

i do see some refer to nl#5 as an ibl
the history of the northern lights 'lines' is so tangled, i don't know what to believe

Dood...Yes. IBL just means Inbred Line-- you can accomplish this by selecting filial generations, cubing, etc...

But...It depends on who's NL

IMO the term IBL used to connote a greater degree of stability over filial generation inbreedings or higher degree of the IBL's phenotypic representation in a cross with a hybrid...

The trade off in creating an IBL is that the more you make the strain "true" through subsequent generations, the more hybrid vigor is lost... A great IBL is one that breeds true through many generations AND is still vigorous. As you point out, some Co's NL's fill these criteria better than others..

Well...IMO you want the 5...BCSC used to have the best a while back largely because it was based on Sensi's-- which before BCSC had the best (once again, we find ourselves talking about Neville)..But, you know, things change over time.

i grew out highgrade's nl#5, quite nice, had the low odor, strong pine odor in the bud(when rubbed)
not sure of the parentage, but sure matched the descriptions i've read of nl#5

It would seem that said breeder/seed distributor of Pure NL or NL 5 would account for the F/BX/IBL among distribution or labeling, no?

Would I be correct in referring to the genetic makeup of Northern Lights as Afghani hybrid with Skunk 1 and Original Haze?

I haven't grown yet but Dr. Atomic's hole breeding career is largely based on his work with NL. I would give it a shot if looking into a good NL. Just ordered Atomic nl/blueberry. I've heard good things and remember an interview back in the day where Marc Emery said it was his fav smoke.

NL#1 is considered a IBL. It will vary from breeders. Take for example white widow.....how many diffrent versions of white widow are out? a friken lot of them. NL was the strain of yesteryear that was good to great potency and easy to grow indoors. Hence why it is used often. Originally its roots were IBL afghani. as it progressed there was thai thown in the mix. I believe this is where it changed it name to NL#2 or NL#5. there was some other genetics that were thown in the mix too I believe, but were not available for very long. It will vary from breeder to breeder however generally it should take on a pine taste characteristics with nice resin production and easy to grow. As for picking a breeder....I would think sensi has the oldest version. Dr atomic also has very good reviews of his NLXBB. If that is what your after. Some are better than others, but I highly doubt that a breeder can totally fuck up NL. So dont be afraid to drop a few bucks on some lesser known breeders if your wanting to just grow it out once.
