I've got lots of eastern European friends, and the majority of them are more straight than most. Tons of pressure from their parents to make something of themselves and succeed, academically, at work, and everywhere else in their lives in general. They know what their parents came from, how hard they worked, and how good their childhood was compared to their parents' childhood. Disappointing the parents is even lower on their list of priorities than your average North American IBL kid.
This is, of course, just my personal experience with people I know.

VERY serious. It's weird and creepy. Us girls don't like weird and creepy. (sorry Yummy). If you joke too much, it's going to be obvious you're trying too hard and that'll turn her off too. The key is.....to not "try". Just be yourself. Have a normal conversation. Talk about whatever the class is about. Find a common interest. We can tell when guys are trying too hard and then it becomes ackward. maybe suggest studying together or grabbing a coffee after class? K.I.S.S. Simple works.
