Best purple strain/cut in 2010 ?

Rainman, absolutely gorgeous looking plants and nuggets there!!! :)

But the flavor is NOT coming from the anthocyanins that are producing the color of the plant (and that color itself is very much pH-dependant) ... anthocyanins are odorless and almost flavorless. (Pineapple Cinderella 99 has a strong pineapple smell and flavor to it but doesnt exhibit any anthocyanin production). However, that's not to say that they don't play at least some role in the resulting flavor overall. But if you could completely shut down the anthocyanin production it would still taste almost identical, all you'd lose is the color.

funny thing you re talking about no different terpens phenomenal. I can say by the taste it s purple buds almost every time. does anthocyanins have a taste ? Most purple i don't like because of this, that earthy incense smell..
but i know not all are like this, still i have to taste a purple i like very much...

your looks gorgeous rainman, and so does the smell sounds !

PhenoMenal - no matter what traits you think are important people will have their own view. It's not a matter of being informed or not. It's subjective so your being objective wont work. BTW have you ever seen a purple tric?

Pheno - You keep using that word like it matters to the convo. and question at hand. The point is the 'Purple' traits are what make people go crazy for the strains. Its not just one thing or some scientific jargon. People go crazy for the purple strains because of taste, smell, beauty of it growing in your garden in a sea of green plants, narcotic high, and simple quality. I am not a scientific kinda guys so I dont know what the scientific name for these traits are but that is what people are digging and looking for in these strains. And if you took away the color it would just be another green plant and whats memorable about that?

I'll put my 2 cents in.

I used to grow Purple Erkle for several cycles, which is a lovely plant. It has all of the characteristics which people like: Deep dark Purple coloration, really dense, smells great, and the stone is decent.

Two things I don't like about PE is that she grows slow in Veg, and she doesn't produce.

And in various areas, such as the Bay Area, many people just want "Purple".

However, IMO, it's a cosmetic type of plant where people just go crazy over the purple coloration, that many aren't willing to give other strains a chance. I personally feel that the stone of PE is rather boring, it just makes me really tired. I'm glad for variety!! I feel the Kushes provide a better quality of stone than many of the "Purple" strains I've partook.

Everyone's preference is definitely subjective, and I'm not knocking the Purple strains, because they do have their place when it comes to variety.

As to which purple strain will be the best in 2010, I haven't got a clue. Happy hunting to all of the Purple Strain Lovers!!

3dDream yes ive grown, seen and smoked purple trichomes... why do you ask? :)

Purple plants are often quite visually nice, just look at any photos in this thread, they're all absolutely _GORGEOUS_, actually some are jaw-droppingly stunning. :)

But I don't smoke buds because they look pretty or theyre purple (and we've all smoked good-looking buds that produced a boring unpotent high!), and at the end of the day the only difference between purple plants and non-purple plants is anthocyanin levels, which is a non-psychoactive. That's just science, it's not my fault! :)

I'm not a dealer so "bag appeal" has never been one of my concerns (quality and potency are my main concerns), and I'm assuming most buyers wouldn't have a clue about anthocyanins ... maybe that's where I'm missing the point in this thread. :/

Maybe this is just an angle that dealers are trying to exploit, I dunno.

Personally I'll stick to smoking strains that exhibit more favorable characteristics like POTENCY, QUALITY, YIELD, natural flavor etc etc ... if some of you guys want to get your pantyhose in a twist over what is nothing more than food dye then so be it - each to their own of course :)

Peace & respect

Hey Pheno chill we get your point about the Anthocyanin, and we know you want potent weed. This thread is for people who want purple weed cuz they like the color. I am sure you don't go round wearin pink shirts all day do you, why not? its the same quality.

A true purple strain;
i mean 2/3 purpleplants in a bag seed, showing it's beautiful color very early.
My own experience: the purple pheno are higher quality than green pheno by far. The taste of purp KF is incredible, great Berry/haze, i don't found this in green one but some KF growers spoke to me about very good green pheno too.
Purple budz have little more

dkmonk, please accept my apologies.

I won't post anymore to this thread as I've said all that needs to be said and it's pointless if not annoying to be repetitive ...

Like i said i'm not a dealer so I'm not familiar with this trend of wanting to buy purple buds, but at least if people know what anthocyanins are (and aren't) they can make up their own mind about exactly what a purple strain is, and why it's that color.

Peace and respect, and keep those beautiful photos coming! :)

I get Pheno's point. They dont yield for shit and the high is just a straight narco headknocker. Some like some dont. Im no dealer but bag appeal should always matter imho. I get smokin weed with the traits you noted but give us a clue to what has you so turned off to the grapes. What ya smokin is what I wonder? Panties? I keep those in my shirt pocket so I can.........Oh! Wait! Thats a diff site.

They dont yield for shit and the high is just a straight narco headknocker.
But that depends on the strain, not its anthocyanin levels :)
You can get both indicas and sativas producing anthocyanin, as well as poor yielders and big yielders, as well as potent and weak, etc :)

That's my point - anthocyanin levels really don't do much from a smokers perspective other than add color (they do actually serve purposes to the plant - see Wiki - but from our point as a smoker they're purely aesthetic). If a purple strain is potent or has a nice flavor that's just from the same reasons that any other strain has nice flavors. Anthocyanins are odorless and almost flavorless -- if you could grow say, Granddaddy Purps with its "purple gene" turned off it would still basically smoke the same and have the same potency.

Ok now i promise i'll shut up so we can focus on the quality purple strains (and they are gorgeous, just look at them!!!) :)

I have come to dislike purple strains because of the hype. When working at a dispensary I got requests for "purp" more than anything else, and our buyers took notice and started getting shwagy purple strains more than ever because they knew they'd sell. Anyways I've grown GDP for years (14 lbs pull last time, pics upon request), Purple Urkle, God's Gift, GOB9, and many other 'green' plants that turned purple for various reasons.

I'm getting a little off point....

Lately I've been interested in one and only one "purple" strain that my friend and a fellow ICer made a few years back it's slowly gaining recognition, but it's in so few hands that it's not really mass produced or even seen too often. I personally know only 3 others that have this cut 1 being the person that made it and is currently MIA so really only 2 others. And of those two only 1 (5leggoat) has flowered her out. I feel very lucky to have met the man behind the strain and even luckier to have his cut. I am going to spread it around my area like, well fire. I have already gifted 2/3 cuts I have of her.

Anyways her name is:
Nancy Botwin
(Purple Urkle X 94' Federation Romulan)

mary eheh thankyou! That's very kind of you :)
But I've already put forward my thoughts on the matter, no need to repeat any of it :)

Like dkmonk said, this thread is about purple strains (whether they're good or bad or ugly or otherwise!), of which there are many beautiful strains, and the last thing I want to do is 'hijack' it in regards to anthocyanins, but I felt it was important to mention (if you love purple strains I feel you should at least be aware of anthocyanins). I've done that, and everybody is free to make up their own minds. :)

I apologise to anyone if they feel I have 'hijacked' this thread in that regard, but don't worry I won't post any more eheh

In the meantime, let's just enjoy these absolutely BEAUTIFUL photos that our resident icmag purple people eaters are sharing :)

Wow GET MO the last one is really something ! looks like somebody spill some rasperry concentrated juice on it !
amazing !

What do you think about purple potency ? it seems that the purple phenos i had were less potent than the green one, on the same strain... And yet i ve never smoked any very potent purple. I have smoked some very decent ones (mazar, hashberry, bubblicious) but they were not true killer herb... Am i mistaking ?

Unknown - The Bandit offered me this cut a few years ago and I wish I had taken him up on the offer. I dont know how many have her or how many phenos but she has been around a while and his picks on her were incredible to say the least. Your GDPs look great by the way and congrats on the cup. I have the original PK, SR-71, and the Ken's GDP. Testing out the Sr-71 again this cycle then the new GDP. Another Purp that should get some love is Braindead's creation. There is a purp pheno I saw and found from his seeds that is just crazy.

Pheno - Dont leave man! All your input is needed even if I cant understand your great big words!

GMo - Cut it out! Outlaw is the man!

heres a couple of my purple strains i got, the jackberry (jack herer x blueberry indica) is a large yielding plant that im waiting for it to reveg, first time round was a 2 week veg an it gave 30 grams off a plant not much taller than a foot. the next are of the purple pakistani chitral, this is from ace seeds, this is the most purple an most flavoursome of the batch so the one i decided to keep, it dries almost black an the stalks of the fan leaves are black, its the most frosty resin covered plant ive encountered but the yeild has got to be the lowet of the lows avge 1 oz per plant from even a 6 week veg, it is very sensitive tho so some growing of this ones needed to figure out the exact nutes etc it needs, the flavour is like sweet blackberrys an so tasty.
