Thanks for the info Genetic H.,I had thought for a second that maybe it was a parasite of some kind, but then just figured it was the caterpillars eggs.
If I would of known at the time that it was a parasite,I would have picked them off before turning the caterpillar loose in my tomato patch.

its a parasitic wasp. caterpillars are babys they dont lay eggs, just eat and eat and eat. then they turn into adults which lay eggs.

Hi. I started studying butterflies and moths at age six. I was a member of the lepidopterist's society and worked at a butterfly farm at 14. At 16-17 I was a zoo keeper and manager of a butterfly exhibit at a major zoo. I was going to go to college for botany, horticulure, zoology, and lepidoptera (study of butterflies and moths) but choose to be my own boss instead in the world of cannabis.
I'd be happy to identify any picture of north american species. One was a great spangled firtilary, one a black swallowtail. The caterpillar is either a tabacco or tomato horn worm(type of sphyncs moth). Unfortunately it is being eaten by larva of a parasitic wasp that laid eggs in it.
I used to breed local species with a goal of increasing the population to make up for the loss of their habitat. I still raise a few monarchs every summer.

This is called a red spotted purple.
Thanks for starting this thread. It's been a while since I got to talk about this stuff.

Some old pics from '07 when I bought a new camera. I don't normally go looking for butterflies but found maybe a hundred just off the shore of lake Mendota in Madison. It was Sept and I believe they were migrating from Canada to Mexico. I saw a nature show about them once. They migrate over a thousand miles a year.
