Is Oakland like any other city or is it THAT bad?

I'm watching a really awesome documentary about Oakland's gang warfare. It's scary as hell and it makes Oakland seem like not your average American city with good and bad parts. Seems like it's 99 percent bad and 100 percent you don't walk alone at night. Weird because the cannabis movement in America took off there- at least from a political perspective.

Do you know Oakland? Thoughts?

just stay out of the area between 60th and 105th and e14th and you will be good.

used to live in "stone city" off 105th. in my one year living there, some 3 people were killed in my neighborhood and about 8 shot and killed in a one mile radius. on 98th and Edes alone FOUR people were shot and killed in 2009. had three cars breakin into, my neighbors got home invaded by a crackhead with a pistol. my other neighbor told me he slept with an AK-47 right by his bed in case of home invasion. living there i was always paranoid my house would be ransacked when i got home. luckily that never happened, now i live in the HILLLLS.

the most dangerous part of oakland is the FLATLANDS. basically 60th-105th, stay out. the 20s and 30s are also pretty messy but they are alot safer.

Oaksterdam and all the pot clubs are in downtown oakland which is safer, thats around like 7th street and broadwayish.

there are worse cities though. gary indiana, some parts of tennessee, camden NJ.

the only weak part about oakland is that regular citizens are not allowed to carry guns, only criminals carry out here. its not like texas where you might have regular citizens who can protect you. in oakland the general population is defenseless while all the OGs pack heat.

There are good parts and bad parts. I'm a guy from what some would call a quality area of the North Bay. I don't have any problem being in Oakland after dark in certain areas. I'll defer to Yes4Prop as far as areas to stay away from. I would not want to live there but I am comfortable in the areas I visit.

yea its not like the wild west out here. you can still drive around, i just wouldnt walk around. the grimiest part of oakland is East Oakland, probably around 85th-95th between E14 and Foothill. there are speedbumps on every block, loads of dudes at every corner all parolees and young baby gangsters. in some areas there will literally be like 20 dudes in the street and like 4 cars so you cannot drive down the street, you gotta do a u-turn and go around.

98th and Douglass what!! i was off 105th and Edes, lovely little neighborhood lol i was drinking at home like everynight with the glock sitting under the sofa cushion. goin to take a piss in the bathroom and hearing "POP POP... POP POP POP" in the distance haha.

if you are looking to move to oakland stay north/east of 580 and do not live anywhere south of 40th. there is alot of nice areas, i was about to live off 35th in laurel which is very gentrified. 35th also leads up into the super posh oakland hills. piedmont, diamond, alameda, they are all very safe and upper class.

yea i think those little kids in the documentary were in the 90s. those kids were a joke honestly, alot of people made fun of them for even talking to the cameras. they are nothing but small fry, sad how some of them got killed though. oakland is on some crazy shit. i grew up in san fran where it isnt that nice either, lost two friends growing up to shootings and we are not ghetto or thug by any means, just regular kids growing up. but oakland is straight crazy, most of the kids being raised out here are from hard working paisa parents and the kids just get restless and crazy.

im pissed off because im just a regular ass dude and the CA law says i cant carry a gun on me, so when i used to go run errands i was always watching my back.

at one of our network car dealerships a worker was shot in a robbery the other day, he got shot in the leg in San Leandro which is just east of East Oakland. two black dudes came onto the lot because my boss repo-d their Yukon and dude pulls out a gun let off a few shots. i was at the house smoking weed when it happened but damn ive been there hella times and its real close to my new house.

also when i was getting car insurance, while i was buying my policy inside the store one fo the workers got robbed outside the store at gunpoint.

the east bay is fuckin crazy sometimes haha. most of the time its chill. i WISH i could move back to san francisco, so much nicer out there.

yup, this is EXACTLY how it is in oakland. flatlands - no, hills - yes.

i was looking at renting a house in oaland flatlands. sitting there waiting for the landlord in my car, two thugs came up to a couple walking and beat them to the ground, right by my car. called he landlord, told hi i didnt want it.

my boy was coming home from frisco late night, hungry as hell. going through oakland on 580, decided to hit up a taco truck. as he was ordering, for no reason, some dude came up, without a word, and shot him in the head.

i just try to stay away, feel me?

You can hear gun shots at anytime of the day, you barely see cops in flat lands. Even if you call them LOL.

Its funny how you can tell just from posts who the suburbanites are and who has actually lived in a real city. Oaktown is no worse that other cities and if you look deeper at the whole issue you would see its actually not bad at all especially compared to Chicago, Atlanta, or the project bottoms of the South. I regularly hang out in Oakland with friends and family and never fear for my life, even after dark. I am browner than most so that may have alot to do with it. I also have grown up in places similar to Oakland in the South. They look scary cause you dont know them, the language or customs. Frankly people as scared as some of you, put off the vibe of victim regardless of where you are in the world. Ironic how places like Oakland make the masses feel like us minorities do every time we go anywhere! The fear you cats feel is just like what we feel when we are in Walnut Creek, Sebastipol, or Half Moon bay! Cops harrassn, natives look like they want to hang you from the nearest tree, etc., etc. Thats way scarier than anything running the streets of Oakland.


Yeson215 - Its obvious you are old and possibly white so if it makes you so uncomfortable being in Oakland - dont go! And please stop the crusade to tell everyone on IC how bad Oakland is. How many threads have you said the exact same thing as in this one. You dont know the blocks and prolly only drive by once and a while so please stop.
