How to determine sex quickly, while still producing moms?

hempknowsis

I was wondering if I could start some sprouts on 12/12 to determine the sex quickly, then still be able to take clones for moms if they are females? If they get too far into 12/12 doesn't the rate of successful cloning go down?

Next problem is while I was looking at the 12/12 from seed thread, I noticed a lot of the plants grew like an xmas tree, straight up, with no side shoots. This would make it hard to take a cut.

Any tips?

take a small clone from the "mother" plant and put it under 12/12.

Right but I have seeds and I'm trying speed things up. I want to basically grow the seed straight from 12/12, then take a clone from it when it shows gender (if possible) for my mother. Then the original seed continues to flower.

i want to know the same thing, only i'd like to clone or reveg the nice females that i get (and if there's a standout male or two, reveg/clone them as well). i asked this very question in chat the other night, and Gypsy told me that the more sativa-leaning the plant, the less likely it would want to reveg. and i'm sure its frowned upon to top in flower, sooooo....

help us!

I suppose you could do this. You would have to reveg those sprouts once they show sex, so it may halt growth at that point. Maybe not much because you'll only just get into the flowering stage... But I am no expert on this.
I am about to start a second round in my cab and hopefully it is perpetual from here on out.
To do this I will be vegging 3-6 plants for a month and then taking clones, and flipping those clones to 12/12 in order to sex. This will also be my first round of flowering plants, so there's no "going backwards" in the plants growth cycle. And once you have identified females, you have your moms... Grow out clones to select the best smoke.
Should work.

I have never done 12/12 so I cannot say. I do 18 then step down to 16 after a month.

sounds like you just need another light to grow more veg plants. well I'm glad your not doing fem seed

lay it over and pick away. pick as soon as you can, whenever it may be. OR reveg like ArcticBlast wants to do. Do it as soon as you see signs.

Another bump to see if others who put sprouts under 12/12 to quickly determine sex and can successfully take a cut when you know its a female....

you can do it . just go ahead and do the 12/12 and take a few lower branches of as soon as there big enough .They will root

YOU WILL KNOW THEM WHEN YOU SEE THEM!

Keep a mom from each cut, it should take less than 2 weeks for a rooted cut to show sex in my limited experience.

The main thing is a rooted cut.

I've read that you can put a bag over a lower branch at timed intervals to stimulate that branch to flower while it's vegging. (maybe 10/14 or longer dark for faster signalling?)

Have read about this but no experience, it does sound like it'd save time.

you can do a few things.
1) is very strain dependent. 12s from seed and As soon as you see pistils take cuttings and reveg. Ive seen a full reveg from 7 weeks on a 10 week strain. This may pose a problem with hermi or more importantly most 12s from seed dont really put many branches and my not give you much to cut for keeping. So that said you may lose a keeper girl this way.

2) Do a standard grow, 18/6 for 2 weeks and clone the tops of all plants. Give them a bit to recover. flower seed plants. You should idealy wait till you have roots on the cuts tho. This will give time for the seed plants to grow some tips out. This will take a little longer but is more "keep little of everything" oriented.

3) top the seed plants at 3rd node, (dont flame) and wait a week or 2 youll have 2 tops on each one. Clone those. Once you have roots there, flower all clones and have mother seed plants ready to go full sog after 1st run b.

just take clones as soon as you see the sex. you can still clone. most plants will branch cept maybe the most sativa strains, even then you can clip a bud and clone and reveg it.

I've read about this in a book by Mel Frank, using a paper bag to allow transpiration and still block light, but leaving it there 24/7 for a couple of weeks after which the plant should have shown sex.
Never tried it but makes sense.

The key is to have a veg AND flower room.

I start seedling in my flower chamber, usually takes them about 3 weeks to show sex, then I kill the males, xplant the females to a bigger container and put them in my veg room. It takes them about 1-2 weeks to revert to veg then you should be able to take good clones.

if you take your clones from plants that are in flower, you will always run the risk of losing the clones. People say they do it, and Im not saying that I haven't or it doesn't work, but strain dependent, health dependent and all other things put risk into taking clones when you are in flower stage.

To go from seed to full batch production the quickest and safest way I have found is, sex your seed plants at around 8-12" in height. If you know what to look for you will be able to tell their sex after about 7 days under 12/12. Then flip them back to 18/6, wait 7 more days, top the plants to take clones, and take any clones available on side branches. Keep veggin till you can clone all plants again, that will give you the most plants the quickest if you are trying to go to full production from seed with the least amount of risk. If someone tells you that its completely ok with 0 risk to losing your clones that were taken from a plant in flower stage they are misleading you.
