How light proof is 'light proof'?

also agree...my rooms arent 100% light-proof, ive had 3 runs, 50+ plants, and not one has turned hermie.
like 'wait...what' says, if a plant needed absolute darkness in flower then surely the moon would effect outdoor grows?

shined flashlights on mine plenty of times as well aas turning on the overhead flourescent light..had no ill effects..even brought one out into full light one night to cut popcorn and put it back 20 minutes later and nothing bad

light leaks are also air leaks, and air leaks can be possible odor leaks. it would best to seal it as best as possible.

:2cents: any light leaks generate hermies, then you end up with seeds,
get aware of it, if you want to smoke weed not seed :2cents:

good point travese,

but my exhaustfan runs 24/7 and only reason for that is to prevent odor comin out unfilterd
-->exhaustfan sucks thru a carbon scrubber, if dont odor comes out the cab (well lightseald of course but odor dont mind it)...

regards :)

From my rather limited knowledge, light leaks are only a problem when they interrupt the dark cycle. My closet is probably only 95% lightproof, but the lights go off an hour or so before I go to sleep and turn on an hour or two after I wake up. Their dark cycle is never interrupted, but rather they get a bit of a "dawn and dusk" where at the start and end of the day a very, very minimal amount of light might be making its way through.
Then again, I still can't see my hand in the dark in there, only some glowing seams.
Just my two cents.

I still dont totally agree, and think most of you who believe it needs to be 100% are NOT speak from EXPERIENCE, just hearsay, or what you read.

I still don't believe moonlight (a full moon) is negligible light when I can definitely see plenty far in front of me, and some of you say "you shouldnt be able to see your hand in front of your face", when is that EVER the case under ANY MOONLIGHT?

i agree watson, and think maybe direct light during dark period is detremental, not light in general...?
but as said before neither of my rooms are 100% light proof (small amounts of ambient light may sometimes come through) and ive never had anything but females...
i would like to know why the moon is an exception to this rule, if true?

Me too.
My guess is that the moon isn't a great reflector... Only a small portion of sunlight hits it, lots of energy is absorbed by the surface, and what is reflected is diffused by the convex shape of the moon. Then it has to make it through the atmosphere, etc.
But that's just a guess. :dunno:

it is not the intensity of light per say, it is the duration of light. 12hrs+ darkness stimulates flowering, period. the light source does change intensity seasonally, yes. but, more importantly, the duration of that light decreases irregardless of the intensity. hermying is due to genetic tendencies. whatever environmental factor only triggered the cannon. that sucker was already loaded. i have never ever had a totally light proof area, prob never will. i find it totally unnecessary.

The moon is not the only source of light "pollution" though... I remember some guy either here or maybe OG, who had grown directly under a street light... and had no problems. I think people take the 100% light proof concept way too seriously... Maybe if you've got a strain that really prone to hermie, it could make a difference. But myself, i'd rather not run such strains anyway.

You have to admit that bathing in the glow of the moon is a lot different than having one pinkie finger bathed in a bright pin-hole streak of light. That particular spot is very likely to pop balls, depending on the particular tolerance of the plant.

The only time I've ever seen a nanner is near light leaks around my doors. I kinda suck at that. :D
