Leave Your Plants Alone - Please!

Just a few words on something that I have been thinking about. I mentor a few people on growing around here. Friends of course but I’ve always wondered why some people never have any luck. People always tell me I have a “Green Thumb” but why? While making my rounds at the hospital I was watching one of my Interns and it hit me….don’t mess with things. I have a young doctor likes to check and recheck every bandage and every cut, bruise, and scrape on patients. He will change bandages two or three times more than necessary and while he is being very careful he is also disturbing the body’s ability to heal itself. I have another friend that is into salt water fish and reefs….he is always putting his hands in the tank rearranging things and cleaning. He never has success and is always complaining about things dying.

So I was thinking - Don’t fidget with your stuff. Let Mother Nature do her work. Let your plants grow and leave them alone!

I have seen many growers checking and rechecking and watering and watering and babying and such….I can tell if my plants need water by just looking at them. I can tell if they are sick or healthy or need more nutrients just by looking at them. Granted this takes a little experience but it will come in time. Don’t over water, don’t replant every other day, don’t move or touch or twist your plants every chance you have. Let them grow! Leave them alone and they will tell you what they need.

Although, check your plants every day for males while flowering….or you’ll be like me and have very healthy seed producing buds 

Just a thought but I hope this helps…

But I get what you saying.

Kcar....I've changed bandages, changed bedpans and even made beds....

We check, we change if we need to or we leave it alone....there is no need as in the specific case i'm talking about to check every few hours if the wound has gotten better or worse.

It was just an example

I've been gone from my babies for 3 weeks now.
I've got leaving them alone down to an art.
(Not really. I have nightmares about coming home to a minor flood or dead plants, etc. every few nights. I can't stop worrying about the poor girls. :( )

as a newbie grower I'd like to make the point to other newbie growers that less is definitely more when your plants are nearing finish... theres nothing I personally would treat in the last 3 week as I'll probably do more harm than good :)

jeez, I would hope my doctor isn't going home and obsessing over weed plants

While I get what you are saying, I think...I'd still rather have my Doc at home obsessing over their plants than popping a few Oxy and downing half a bottle of Scotch before my surgery.

It's freaking cold here in the Sunshine state!

i basically follow this advice but if i need to transplant im not the gentlest, ive trimmed roots , left roots exposed during transplant even, weed is a weed, u can get away with alot, what experince teaches u is how to do the least amount of work for the most benefit, like properly sizing your plants in the right container from the jump, and mastering the art of watering not to much not to little, i try to not worry too much and just count the blessing u get , cause u never really now what your going to get.

So often you see growers, usually beginners, basically killing their plants with love.

I agree - let them grow - it is a weed after all!

Wanna play with something? That's why god invented pockets. If you love your plants, keep your hands off as much as possible.

for sure. most new growers want to put as much time and money into their new babies as possible to keep everything 'perfect.' i learned realllllly quickly that this was not the answer after my first attempt. second run, i took the less is more stance, and my plants were almost flawless. its amazing what mother nature and the ganja goddess can do when you just let them do their thing. like its been said many times before... it is a weed after all.

Very true. As a new grower this was hard to learn, because I wanted to do something with em everyday. I always think it's humourous when someone post a Whats Wrong with my Plant!?! and it has like 1 little yellow spot.

It's weed, give it light and it'll grow.

i also love when new growers go and spend huge amounts of cash on some sort hydro system and then ask me what pH is all about. classic... every time. i just throw dirt at them.

I agree. My family is big on gardening and a few family members have small farmsteads. So I have been around growing of other things for a long time. Don't know any other canna growers in real life, but know alot of veggie growers that have only been doing it 1 or 2 years.

same thing with veggies, the newer growers are so in to it and so pumped about doing something that they kill them with kindness.

I don't agree with this, it may work for you but your style may not work for everyone. I move, touch and twist my plants every day, and they respond in an immensely positive way. I bend, tie and weave branches together to get them to behave exactly as I want them too and they reward me with vigorous growth and perfect form. I also replant multiple times, 3-4 times in a plants life and I think it has improved my root system. Root restriction and balanced feeding work miracles for taming unwieldy sativas. This method also creates a dense root ball that seemingly explodes when given a bigger grow space with fresh soil. I also think frequent repotting into fresh soil lessens the need for feeding, really streamlining the grow process.

great plants come with experience.
