im needing to shut the intake and exhaust pipe off when its not being used as its freaking cold up here i have seen the dampners that can fan sells but im a cheap ass anybody have a diy method that works?

Yeah, those are crappy and over-priced. The good thing about high-power inline fans is that they can push/pull open a pretty heavy flap without much penalty in the way of CFM. I'm trying to figure out how best to make one for inline use.

here you can get a 300 mm one for veiling exhaust fans...should be able to pick one up for under $30...

Spring loaded, weighted, motorized, or rubber / cloth flap (typically gravity based).

Here's a weight based damper (12"; was used as a pressure relief damper in a previous room):

Do you know where that extra-strong spiral metal duct can be found?

I was wanting large-diameter CPVC.

I've found spiral duct from HVAC supply shops, but never at a Home Depot or Lowe's.

Yeah grow nerd: I agree with that. Those big box places don't have much quality stuff for HVAC. I've been looking around for who carries the rigid spiral stuff. I see commercial buildings done up with it all the time so there must be a network of suppliers.
