Product Review: Messermeister Herb Snippers

ItsAllOver

Devil's Advocate
I was in the fancy-shmancy cooking store today when I glanced at these
Messermeister Herb Snippers (commercial website, looks legit but I can't say for sure)
It was love at first sight with these snippers of the well-known Messermeister quality, at an uncommonly low cost.

There's no spring, just the flexible plastic in the joint. (And I bet you could take a Dremel or something to one or more of those plastic "leaf springs" to customize the squeeze pressure) It's got similar 'squeezing resistance' to the Fiskars Softouch, but the way you hold them makes it feel a bit easier. I like how your hand is so close to the tips of the blades for fine work like snipping the stem of little sugar leaves inside of buds (I am a perfectionist trimmer, until I get to that 1 lb. mark anyway...) A shaky guy like me (doc says benign tremors...:chin:) has a hard time doing small movements of the tip of the scissors when my hand is back at the grips like normal, longer scissors. But with these, you slip your ring finger through that hole, and rest your thumb on the impression near the blades, making for easy and comfortable snipping! I just spun them around the back of my hand each time I wanted to buck the fan leaves off of major branches, then spun them back around for snipping off buds and for sugar-leaf trimming; I think these could be very efficient for getting a lot of weight done in short order... I should know that for sure soon. They are easily disassembled for cleaning, too.

A negative aspect that I can think of is the way the blades separate near the base (tip section makes perfect contact, though) when you make snips. It's like the tips are angled in to one another, making the base separate by maybe 1/32" when brought together, which is still pretty tiny. Partially because of this, they are not suitable for cutting stems any thicker than maybe 1/8". It will work, but not well, and maybe not for long. Chopping branches is not the job of these scissors, but they clean up and separate those beautiful buds very well!

For their quality of construction, comfortable performance, and with a price-tag of $5, I give these scissors an unquestionable

I wish you all sore hand-muscles, because you know it's a good thing.

I find finger holes and trimming weed a bad combination. Finger holes become uncomfortable after a few minutes. After an hour they become quite painful. Takes me 8-10 hours to trim my plant. Consider spending an extra $3 for a pair of hole free Fiskars.

I use the exact same scissors but mine are white and are a no-name brand. I love them! They work fucking wonderfully for trimming. I personally never use the finger hole, and my fingers don't get tired...

Yea, if you read the review I mention those scissors although not the precise model, and compare against them to a degree. The Micro Tips were my favorite for some time. I have trimmed for maybe 25 hours altogether with them. (my hand begins to cramp with those within 3-4 hours)
Have you tried the herb snippers, or just making that statement by other designs that have holes?
I found these to be comfortable when used for a couple of hours. I'll soon have a longer test, but my suspicion is that they are going to remain comfy for some time.
And really, if it's the hole that bothers you, don't use it, as Huey said... (I just tried and I like it that way, too) You could even shave it off altogether it you're interested in that.
I don't even feel my finger in the hole when I am using the herb snippers. Barely any contact... Maybe if you have very thick fingers, they might hurt. I think the angle your finger goes in the hole is what determines whether or not it is comfy, anyway, and these do not jam into the finger at all based on the angle that it goes in.
The important thing with these is the closeness of the blade tip to the grip of your hand and the location of the fulcrum, which gives you greater control and speed. The Fiskars aren't designed for that.

Try em, you might like them.

Maybe it is if you are not thoughtful or interested in advancing your knowledge. If you've tried them and don't like these, that's cool and I'd be interested to hear about your experience and why they didn't work out for you. Big ass fingers?

i have no need for these, these look like a remake of the old sheers but plastic they about the same size as herb snippers where too small for the average Paw and it was just alot faster to trim by hand, i pluck the fan leaves and the jobs done

atleast you can swap out the blades, the sheers sold at grow shops where like $2 each and disposable.

THC43: Yea I tried just plucking some of mine this last grow, that would work for a lot of the leaves, but I trim my product to an almost leafless state for bag appeal. People would rather pay for calyxes only (trichome dense) and I don't think I could personally pluck that well. maybe if I plucked the smallest leaves after they were dry... Anything to shorten trimming time! It's fun for a while, but gets tedious for sure.
whadeezlrg: I wasn't offended, no probs at all. I just would rather people only pipe in with negative attitudes if they have experience with the particular product, not just with other products that have a similar characteristic or part to them. It's not the same.
If the anti-hole argument is about comfort, then you should try these and rethink the premises of the argument. Your conclusion might be different. Then again it might be all up to finger size. But really using these without slipping my finger through the hole they work very well, too!
Adios, amigos

I will definitely be trying a few pairs of those. Last trimming session I went through half a dozen pairs of scissors, all different kinds. They would just snap in half or get so stuck that they weren't even worth cleaning for the price.

I had a few of what freezerboy had too and one pair broke in half cutting through stems. My hands would get really sore from using them. So far I really haven't found anything comfortable.

Neither of these are for cutting stems. Loppers, pruning shears or even (gasp) regular scissors are the choice for lumber.

Whichever you buy, get two. Keep one in alcohol while you trim with the other. When you switch, the one that's been soaking will wipe clean with ease. Someone suggested spraying the blades with PAM during use but, I don't know about that one.

i like a little leaf I dont mix with backy so that little leaf helps my Js burn well.. And i hate trimming and so it seems does everyone i know happy to smoke not work for it:gift:

by hand i get 90% of the leaves from the bud, hold the stem pluck downwards on anything that grows outwards, frosty leaves stay on flowers. I never get sticky fingers and now takes minutes rather than hours by hand over scissors..

all strains are different though ive chosen low leaf ratio mums that helps so does having a sat dom as most of the leaves grow out from crowns

Heres my fav clone Bigbud, the leaves are easily plucked off this one single blade leaves by harvest are also easily plucked/ snipped.

Bag appeal means jack to me all weed here in OZ sells for the same price $3200us or $250 US dollar now near the the same LOL good or average same $$$ but then i dont have a huge circle of growing friends, prices vary with bush though quite a bit cheeper between march and June.

I'm just so damn trampy about my scissors... I even like the gunky build up

I think I got 3 pairs for 1.50...it's probably time I invested in some decent ones :)

What do you use for cutting stems? Just some one-handed garden shears? I really need to work on my tool collection.

I would definitely hold off on the pam.

Blade choice really depends on the precision required. Leaf stems and bud stems take precision. Stalks and cola stems need little more than blunt force, any banged up old blades will do. In my SOG days, I chopped the stalks with needle nosed dykes, my ScrOG needs a tree lopper.

PAM does sound kinda gross ...
