New Years Resolution - my first one in 25 years

My wife and I have been together over 25 years, married 23+...

In all that time I have pointedly NEVER made a resolution - I felt they were shallow, insincere gestures made in the heat of the moment...

Well, my hunny does not smoke - and my smoking has been a MAJOR bone of contention over the years. The smoking, and the cost of smoking.

I told her for Christmas that I would not buy any weed in 2010, as a resolution, for her. She was almost speechless, and said right away in a low, shocked voice that I never make New Years resolutions. She is really happy about it. She understands I'm not quitting smoking, or growing with Netwerx - just not purchasing. It will be VERY tough - I smoke alot of weed, but I can, and will do it, for her.

I love my wife, we have 2 beautiful boys (young men), and a nice little home together. She is a very good woman, and my best friend. I can't give her much in the way of material things, but I knew this would be a "special" present for her...

Anyone who really loves someone will understand this...

Speaking of smoking, (I'm leaning towards cigarettes, not weed), I smoke almost 3 packs of Menthol cigarettes a day. Depends how stressed out I am.

I started with Marlboro lights Menthol
Smoked Kool's for a while
Salems, Newport 100's
Went to Marlboro Milds, now back to Marloboro Menthol 100's

But I prepared myself all this month of December and knew mentally it was time for me to quit. It sounds weird cause I play Basketball, and I ski, but the cigarettes went from being something I "enjoyed" to "I don't know why I even smoke them anymore".

I don't try to do unrealistic New Years Resolutions, but I am going to quit smoking cigarettes. Regardless of withdrawls I'll have, my body is telling me it's time. If you can't do it MENTALLY first, you'll never do it. Have the will and the mental power to say NO, and you can quit.

Plus it will be nice to live longer!!

i see new years resolutions as a crutch in the form of a date. an insignificant one in your life. what does that change of year have to do with bettering yourself?

id see it as picking any date and sticking to that being your resolution at that date onwards...

procrastination, indulgence(just until the new year!!) come to mind. Thinking about all my friends that make these excuses to stop smoking, like my best friend and i quit smoking(cigarettes) in october sometime, i kicked it, he continues, but only until new years eve....*rolls eyes*

although since it is so near, and newly on my mind, ive decided to start buying better quality produce and food, so that i can eat more healthily. probably starting tomorrow...lol

close to new years...but it's just another day.

I was lucky - my motherinlaw (who I adore) asked me to, and I did.

She was watching her ex boss slowly drown from terminal lung cancer, he had been life long heavy smoker. She said that I was going to have to quit, and I said I would someday. She said, no - you have to quit now.

So I did - It's 5 years on April 15th...

It was so easy - I just stopped. You hafta wanna. No wanna, no bother...

Good for you Classy.

On the subject of new years resolutions, if starting to workout is yours(anyone), then please make sure your committed to it for the long haul, god I hate tripping over all the clueless assclowns that flock to the gym after the 1st, and then are gone 4 weeks later.

I applaud you for a three reasons: 1) Trying something new 2) Caring about others feelings 3) creating your own medication.

and will leave this thread with this: Since I quit "buying weed", I am now able to enjoy more smoke than I ever had, and my friends are in the same boat, all now rowing merrily merrily down the stream of life! Quality has gone up also...BONUS!

Best wishes on your journey!

Congratulations SCS. You certainly can stop. I've been through it, and below are some thoughts which I posted for someone a few months back.
Happy 2010!

I quit years ago. Watch out for situations when you are with friends who smoke, especially if you're drinking or after a meal. Also after sex. Those were the times when I would fall into the trap of mooching just one smoke. Then another. Then I'd buy a pack, and keep smoking for a few months. Then I would quit again for several months. Eventually I managed to quit for good, after about six years of stopping and starting.

I found it easy to stop smoking for weeks and months straight, but I kept falling back into those traps. That urge would strike hard and fast. Eventually I beat it though. I began focusing on all the negative aspects of smoking in my life - stinking ash trays, health risks, money wasted, etc. This turned me against it and definitely helped me quit for good.
