JOPLIN, Mo. (Associated Press) --
Some people won't be getting the Christmas presents they were expecting.

Missouri troopers seized about 20 pounds of marijuana from a car this week _ some of it in luggage, and some in boxes wrapped as Christmas gifts.

The Highway Patrol says troopers found the marijuana in the car they stopped for speeding on Interstate 44 near Joplin.

Two California women in the car gave troopers permission to search the vehicle. Both were charged Tuesday with one marijuana-related count and released on $1,000 bond.

They got $1,000 bond in Missouri, for hauling 20 lbs?! Possession of 35 g to 30 kg in MO is a felony with penalty up to 7 years and $5,000 fine ... And the women arrested were from out of state. The story is all over the news, so it's legit unless the source is wrong. Anyway, I hope they get off. Too bad they gave consent.

Will you consent to a search of your car?
"If I'm not under arrest, but you won't allow me to leave, then I would like to call my attorney"
Never even address the issue of the search directly in the first place.

Good response.

Cops are professionals at intimidation and manipulation. They do it all the time, and it usually works because it scares the hell out of most people. The best defense is a well rehearsed response, like ddrew's. Say nothing else.

And what's wrong with that?????? If you consent your busted, fuck, always say no, at least that way they might not search it at all, and if they do, they will have to justify the grounds for the search in court as you refused it, and they went ahead anyway.

That's all you need to say.

My last speeding ticket I literally never spoke a word.
Cop walked up to the car and showed me the speed gun with my MPH on it, said some stuff, wrote the ticket, and that was it.
I went to a hearing officer a couple weeks later and cried bullshit on the whole thing and got it whacked.
Never talk to the cop, that's like bitching to the cashier at SuperAmerica about the price of gas, there's nothing they can do about it.
Shut up till you get to court then let your attorney do the talking. Any talking or consent on your part prior to that will only make things worse everytime.

That conventional wisdom doesn't always work out for the best in practice. If you are stopped and the cops suspect you may have the demon weed, they will often simply call for the drug dogs that will be happy to "alert" weather or not they actually smell it.

I have avoided getting caught multiple times by NOT asserting my "rights", slipping by by playing a role.

So your saying you have some magic song and dance "role" that you go into after the cops have asked for permission to search your car that makes them not want to it search anymore???? Bullshit.
Because that's what were talking about here, how to handle yourself once consent to search has been asked for.

Telling people to start making up some story(role) is bad advice.
