Preflowers an accurate way to sex outdoor plants?

Well, as the title says, is it accurate to sex plants that have been growing outdoors for about 8-10 weeks and showing preflowers? I know the cloning method to sex, but clones in the house isn't always a viable option. Thoughts? Special techniques? :window:

Just give the plants another week+ and if they show male parts, chop them. You have a few weeks until the pollin sacks blow their load. and pollinate your girlies.

Preflowers should show up at about 30-45 days after germination at the 5th node, (some plants are stubborn), when the plants are about 12" tall. Topping the plant can delay the appearance of a preflower by weeks or months, so don't top any plant that your hoping will express its sexuallity.

The little preflower should be viewed in the context of other factors such as the appearance of the plant, color, etc. Females are often shorter, fatter, thicker and darker than males even in their younger stages. Branching angles in some strains is more extreme in males. There are clues to assist you beyond the flower.. Usually, i have a pretty good idea who is a girl and who is a boy before the preflower appears. Sometimes i am shocked and wrong.

My experience has been that if a plant shows a female preflower, then its a female plant. If it shows a male flower very early, there is about a 75% chance it is male, ... but i have seen plants that showed maleness in the preflower turn up female 3 months later.

It's as accurate as your abilities to distinguish male and female preflowers.
If you know what your looking for ( balls or hairs) and they're there to see.
As was mentioned above you have a good window of time before the male preflowers open and release pollen. Female preflowers should be obvious. Just keep an eye on the questionable ones and do what you will with the confirmed. Good luck

^^^^I agree I go by female pre-flowers but I use the 60-day rule but really doesn’t matter once you see a female pre-flower your good. It might just be me but I have a harder time spotting the male pre-flowers than the females.

What I do outdoors so I don’t have to come back every week is once the female pre-flowers start showing I pull everything else. I might accidentally pull a female but at least I didn’t have a male hiding out. Don’t worry about killing all your females just remember that you should be at least around 50/50 male/female ratio. If it seems like it doesn’t add up then just wait until you’re sure. The first time can be stressful but I think it works great.

Using this method I have never missed a male plant. It’s important to me because I cant always plan on being at my grow site so pulling the males ASAP is important.

I force my seedlings until pre-flowers show, I do it until I have enough females for my sensi, and the remaining plants get sent for breeding if needed.

Absolutely preflowers are an accurate way to determine the sex of a plant. Its great that the plant puts them out because the earlier you get those unwanted plants out of the garden, the longer the females have to fill in the gaps... :yummy: :tree:

On the female preflowers would you need to see the pistils for it to be confirmed female or is the shape enough? I am guessing that you would also need a good magnifying glass, no?

If this method does prove accurate, then there is no need to take clones and put them under 12/12 I guess...

Haha, unless you want it for breeding, but yes

How long after the preflowers emerge then would it be before the two pistils show?

shortly afterward, the 2 pistils are part of the single flower preflower).... I don't use a magnifying glass... If its small enough you need a magnifying glass, just wait a couple days...
