off flavors and smells after harvest

howdy all

i've been experiencing a LOT of off flavors and "old closet" tastes in some of the more recent grows. the setup is just fine and currently using ffof and pbpb during flower w/ a 2 week flush. im beggining to think the problem is coming from the location. ventillation has been an issue and was addressed with a hack up air conditioner (i was in a big disagreement on this), even if there had been proper techniques applied i think the fact that it is an older building and quite a lot of cigarette smoking goes on that it might be contaminating the herb with these horrible flavors and smell.

when it comes to harvesting/curing, it is dried in a plywood box and then transfered to paper bags. then jared and burped for several weeks. but regardless of all of this (which i assume is pretty de facto) i still manage to find horrible tastes. it actually smells and tastes just like the area its been grown in.

is there any way to correct this issue that you can think of other than relocation? also, is there anything that can be done once curing that can help either rid or mask the flavors of the herb ?

i've used orange peels and even pine needles and nothing seems to really hold. it just keeps going back to the same old raunchy flavor. and it's really a shame, becuase some of the buds are absolutely breathtaking.

Man that sucks! Wish I had a clue as to something you could do but you've already tried the peel in the jar trick and even PINENEEDLES, so I really don't know what to tell you. This type of situation is well beyond my pay grade if you know what I'm saying...Freezer will probably have some good advice or someone else that is more knowledgable, so sorry I couldn't be of any help. Good luck to you though!

I don't know your cause but here's a few ideas.
Clean and sanitize your grow area before your next run. It could be your nutes, maybe go lighter or switch. Also I always thought paper bags effected the flavor, last time I used em was 2003. Lights being too close can prevent flavor from developing properly. Having them a little higher won't really effect the yield and will improve taste and smell.
Don't use pine needles or orange peels, you'll never get the real flavors that way.
Try describing the bad taste a little better and give a bit more info about strain and grow.
Hope this helps.

Also tobacco poisoning is common with tomatoes and similar vegetation. Is it smoked close to your plants? As far as fixing the taste at this point, it's probly not gonna happen. My best advise is to totally re dry and re cure in jar.

i bet you money it is the plywood man. for some reason, certain woods, especially Teak or the Lighter woods, bleach the smell out of the herb. quite quickly, i may add too. if you remove the plywood from the situation, i bet there will be a noticeable difference. the scent/taste you describe happens when i have put moist bag herb into my cigar humidor box. it is teak i believe though.....maybe balsam wood.

I'd have said flush but, you did that.

Matanuskan may be on to something. Make one change to the system at a time and see what happens.
