29 years ago tonight

Somebody may have already reminded everyone and I missed it, sorry, but 29 years ago tonight, sometime after 11PM EST, John Lennon was shot. I can still remember the exact moment I heard about the tragedy, like the JFK getting shot or something. RIP John.

Me too. What a waste of talent. I wonder what he would be doing musically today?

"Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one"

it never fails to bring me to tears, one of the finest people
to walk the face of this planet, aside from the sheer loss
of talent he was a humanitarian whose potential was never
reached, truly the world is worse off without John Lennon.

I had woken up to clock radio telling me he was gone - I called in sick to work, and stayed in bed all day listening to his music.

It profoundly rocked me - loss of innocence, and all that...

My dad was a huge Beatles fan. I've grown up on John's music. I remember that day it was the only time i saw my father crying.
You're missed John.

I remember it like it was yesterday, I was watching monday night football when Howard Cosell announced it, what a blow. The folly of madmen and guns.

Sadly, this was back during a time period 'fad' phase when shooting people was popular
among nutjobs who thought they could 'mend' the world by assassination.
John's death was just one more senseless tragedy in a successively long line of idiotic
brutalities.

We all miss you and your music man.

Be careful what you wish for. If Jimi Hendrix were alive today, it's likely he'd be clunking out endless re-runs of Purple Haze at the 'Sixties Revue' in Las Vegas with George Benson.

If Double Fantasy was anything to go by, Lennon had shot most of his musical bolts during his hiatus, but that's not to denigrate (some of) his previous work. Although Frank Zappa never had many good words for Lennon after his encore appearance at the Fillmore East Mothers gig turned into the censored, re-edited rip-off product that was side 4 of Sometime in New York City...;)

Not sure I can agree with the Hendrix prediction, although anything is possible. Jimi was a trailblazer, and people like that are much less likely to fade away. I'm going to choose NOT to remember Hendrix, with a white fro, in a sixties musical revue... :)

Interesting point about the Lennon/Zappa disagreement. I had not heard about that, so I just googled and found this interview with Zappa about your above reference:

It does seem that Frank got screwed in this instance.

I don't think anyone would ever say John Lennon was an "angel." He was an imperfect human, had common human flaws, and had those flaws magnified by being a powerful celebrity in the media spotlight. But the guy did more good with his gift than most, and his advocacy for peace puts him right up there with other historical greats, in my opinion.
