thanks.
i think that idea of 'permaculture' that they're practicing at polyface and that pollan was talking about is essentially steiner's idea in biodynamics of 'the farm as organism'...

but yeah, i agree that there's probably a lot of voodoo in bd discussion, however it does provide a wonderful macroscopic view and approach to doing one's gardening!

Polyface farm was a great example of sustainable practice. I think Steiner would have approved. And the macroscopic view is so important, yet not recognized within conventional ag. The necessity of his forest nearby to his fields and pastures was very interesting to me.

FWIW, the concept of biodynamics is extremely valid in the sense that it actively cultivates farmers who are acutely aware of the natural world which they live in. I have spent much of my life around large corporate farms and mostly 'they' seem to embrace the philosophy of trusting the chemical companies to advise them on their needs. They spend very little time actually out in the fields.

In fact, not to get too deep into philosophy, I feel that the disconnect from nature is a widespread pandemic across most of the western world. From the food we eat to the jobs we keep most people have no connection with the real natural world.

Sustainable ag or permaculture, however you want to call it is an easy, awesome way to establish that connection again. Like you said Georgi- seeing the farm as one organism which can sustain itself, or even better yet recognizing that all farms and the entire planet is all connected and is one giant organism. Being able to swallow that concept and then turn around and live it your daily life is a powerful thing.

ok... thanks for letting me get that out.

as for 'Botany of Desire' we enjoyed it very much. The cannabis piece was even my least favorite, compared to apples, potatoes, and tulips. I don't blame it on the producers though. Its probably due to the legal status of the plant made it harder to get an indepth study going. I dunno, I just felt they could have done alot more on the subject of the awesome herb.

I have been reading up on biodynamics, mostly the planting calendar but I so wish I can find a web site were I can just copy it. Been reading up on it on this site
http://www.biodynamics.in/calendar.htm
but I cant seem understand it that well….
Great thread keep up the good work!
Im anxious to see how your voids turns out, TGA and sub have some great strains, ive have always seen some amazing buds with vortex and all of subs gear!!

Oh and jay ill be sure to post some pics when I get around to building the vortex. Its my next project but I need to finish what I got going on now, safe some money and if all is well…it will be built..

'watching botany of desire now... 'very entertaining! pollan's a terrific speaker. thanks for the tip about the pbs show. i'd only been looking at the book and hadn't realized it'd been made for tv as well.

here's an online site where you can read a reduced version of the thun calendar in either german or with weird/funny english tranlation ==> http://www.astrologie-info.com/mocal.cgi?month=12&year=2009&day=1&language=eng&sidtrop=sid

here's a good site for general bd info ==> http://attra.ncat.org/attra-pub/biodynamic.html

a online survey course from the oregon biodynamic group ==> http://www.oregonbd.org/Class/class.htm

i'm definitely looking forward to the void! i've had the auh1 and the bfbc in my last grows and have become accustomed to their taste et al, so it'll be happily interesting i'm sure to foray the void by comparison...
