Coco NOT

Just sourced a bag and am going to do a trial. Wanted to start a new thread since the other Coco Not thread turned into a flame war. I am waiting for some cuts to root and then I will begin testing w/ plants. From what I understand this product is shredded Red Wood bark and does not hold nitrogen, cal and mg like coco. I filled a small 5" x5" x5" square plastic pot with the coco not and set it in about 3 inches of water to simulate an ebb & flow table. The coco not did not wick up the water and only the bottom couple inches was moist. I then filled another pot, hand watered and collected the run off. Even after pouring 2 liters through a small pot it was still very airy and did not seem to retain alot of the water, in fact after pouring it out alot of the fibers where still dry. I think it is very similar to hydroton in water retention. The run off water was collected and tested at 0.4ec (source water was 0.2ec) so there is very little salt present. More info to come.

There are a whole lot of materials that do NOT wick water. Fine shredded plastic will react the same. What are you trying to prove? What makes coco special is that is DOES wick water AND retains a good air space.

Thank you Seed Buyer. I greatly appreciate that you're doing these side-by-side comparisons and sharing your results with the community.
I'm sure some people will find this information quite valuable, even if BlindDate so obviously doesn't.
As usual, everyone has to find and do what works best for themselves. For some people, maybe this coconot product will produce better results than they achieve currently.
I for one am interested in this product, but not for cannabis cultivation. Rather, I have an extensive orchid collection. While sphagnum moss is used by many orchid cultivars, I always had problems with it because it stayed too moist. I now use coco coir for my orchids that require very high moisture.
I can also tune my mix with charcoal and perlite for orchids that require a little less moisture. Now I may have another choice of additive to play with, coconot.

BlindDate....thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge in regards to the new coco not medium. I am sure other members who are curious about this product will benefit from your post.

coconaut....I grow some phalaenopsis and see this as being a very viable medium for these plants.

Thanks Krunchbubble....I was following that thread but after it turned into a piss fight I thought I might start another one w/ pics. Given your experience and consistently awesome crops, if you say it is garbage then I am betting that is the case. However, I dont see this as a medium that would work w/ hand watering. I think it is gonna need irrigation every few hours and I suspect that may be why it didn't work for your girls. I do doubt this will replace the 50 Ltr sacks of Bcuzz coco I have recently come to love!

I just finished my Coconot plants. I'm not sold. At least treating it like Coco does NOT work. Plants in Coco did much better.

I agree that it might work better in an automated system with multiple waterings daily as the stuff just doesn't hold water. It goes straight to the catch tray.

I dumped a pot to check the roots, and found basically nothing, almost NO roots at all. Fungus gnats LOVE the stuff too, never did get rid of them completely.
