guitarist out there - tune down 1/2 step? you like or no like?

I usually end up getting into a specific band/style, say like Zeppelin/Page, and have to tune accordingly. So for the last 6 months I've been standard. Now I'm getting my Jerry Cantrell cravings back and I'm about to go half-step down. What do you guys usually do? Also, for well-sounding dropped D - should the main set-up be standard, or half-step down? Because if you're already a half a step down, the dropped D (the low E) becomes like C

like u said, for it to be drop d it would have to be done in standard tunning, a half step down is what they call drop c and it sounds bad ass if ur into heavy stuff. hope that helps

Love half-step down and full step down for bands like Lost Prophets. Humbuckers pull it off better than single coils if you want that extra menace to it.

Have you been played the new AIC album yet? Not hard at all. The classics still do it for me though.

Try a few soundgarden wacky tunings for fun too.

LOL,Don Dump's cool as shit!!I always wondered where we got the term B.B.Q!!!!
dude right!? i just gave em some rep for it - that's a fairly obscure but fiugging SICK tune. The verse part is the best -and yeah you def. need it tuned down 1/2 step for it. Man I should be doing school shit right now but no purpose, drizzed and baked and no turning back, sleep is happening:eggnog:

Used to drop a step for Van Halen but never dropped for AIC. Never heard of dropping a half step either. I guess your ear is better than mine.

oh man once in a while I'll tune to to something like CBGEAD? for "Burden in My Hand," and then ur shit's all phukked up and out of tune until you change it. It sucks. I need like MULTIPLE guitars. I used to have a bass tuned to the OPPOSITE of what my guitar was at, to try and balance it all out. I would REALLY like a fretless bass. MMmmmm
EDIT: no no..Burden in My Hand is like CGCGGE...
EDIT: unless I'm thinking about When the Levee Breaks when Page slides and shit with open tuning...it was like GGE at the top 3

yea lots of bands like metalica ect drop 1/2 a step...just cant get that sound if you dont do it...i tune by ear so no idea if i tune to e or down that 1/2 a step(but think im 1/2 from the harmonic i have memorized ) tuning the e down to and d is pretty cool to to play with and can get some heavy sounds... but a real shit if only part of a song is in the d like bon jovi's "lay your hands on me" intro hence the double neck he uses...or just get and EVH guitar with the cool pull out bit on the tremolo...got plans to get me one down the track :D .HH. =]-~

i love tuning down to drop D. for me, a half step doesn't really make a difference unless i'm playing with others, but if i had to pick a preference it'd be a half step down for that extra depth to the sound. gotta love it.

if you're ever bored and too stoned to work on that paper, try tuning for slide guitar. lots of different configurations on google and whatnot you can try. and you don't even need one of those fancy glass slides!... just use the smooth metal handle of a knife! or an apple corer! slide guitar is funnnnnn.

It seems easier to sing dropped down a half step for me. I'm a poor singer at best, and the extra half step down gives me that extra note.

Hendrix, jerry cantrell, slash, van halen, SRV all seem to dig it, so it's good enough for me.

Was just getting ready to say that most people that tune down a 1/2 step do so because it suits their vocal range better.

exactly burned out and fully baked (jesus you guys have some serious stoner names)...
Alice in Chains did it because of their singing. Hard to hit those high notes when you're...high. So they just brought it down a half step. Layne could hit the high notes but not Jerry aka Jimmi Hendrix's white reincarnation

gotta have stoner names on a stoner site... Just like you need good old h20 to grow our stoner pot

I'm just getting into some open g tunings and some slide guitar now. Between that, drop d, half step down, and others I've just started carrying around a tuner with me.

Over now by aic has a pretty funky tuning that's fun to jam to.
