Best way to preserve a rare strain-breed or clones?

If one had beans from a strain that cannot be obtained anymore would you be better off popping a few and hoping for a keeper pheno and cloning her or making a seed run if there's a male too and then having more seed?

I would make some Inbreed F2's and also outcross it by combining it with another good strain. I received some random seeds from some west coast growers who just make their own seeds and I trust they know what they are doing. The nature of these seeds and my contact with the growers(or lack there of) means I will never have access to them again.

As a result I am planning on making F2's and crossing them with another strain to preserve the genes. I will be crossing it with Mazar-I-Sharif which is now impossible to find as Gypsy gave them all away. Kill two birds with one cross. Now I have some F2's and some good seeds of the cross. Only one mazar survived so no F2's possible.

I am sure, positive, in fact, that if you desire Mazaar I Shariff seeds, they can be obtained.

I'd grow them out and make more seeds (back crosses/out crosses) while keeping clones of the stand out plants.
Seeds are easier to maintain than clones especially if security is an issue.

You can do this and/or grow out all the F2's and save the unique/best offspring and make F3's to better discover what that gene pool can produce and possibly refine it alitte.


Lola you don't want your MIS? I'd take them but don't know If they are good enough to buy, I've heard alot of problems with hermies and other issues in some plants. This is no doubt due to the variability in the seeds genes and to be expected. I've only grown two females out one hermied very badly and the other is doing well so far.

Why not just grow them out see what you get? Worst case you have something for hash or butter.

Seeds can travel across boarders and stay viable for years. The one true way to preserve the strain is to give it to other people. There are tales of awesome strains/clones lost forever because someone was too greedy to share.

lets say you have 10 of the best seeds ever,,,and you want to preseve yo sh1t

1st},,,,,,grow all seeds "as carefully as possible"

2nd},,,,,take clones from everything and lable as P1#1,,,,P1#2,,,P1#3,,, etc,,,,[keep clones indefinetly inside enviroment controled "mother room"]

3rd},,,,,cross everthing.......[eg,emagine you had 10seeds 5male and 5female],,,,,,,,,its 5 x 5,,,you get 25 different indervidual crosses,,,,,,lable them up and bank as 1000`s of seeds in the deepfreeze,,,,,

4th},,,grow out the 25 indervidual seedlines seperatly inside controled enviroments.....

[note that aplying different enviromental pressures to each line will result in different effects,,,,aclimatization can have a mulittude of effects!!,,,a Lack of UV might have a drastic effect,,,,,just keep that in mind, this is 25 different lines!!]

5th} inbreed the 25 lines seperatly in controled enviroments,,,,,,continue to seperate every single cross you make, ,,,

[eg,,if you grow 10 seeds from each of the 25seedlines,, thats 250 plants total!,,,,,,,if you then inbreed each of the 25 lines seperatly,,,thats 625 new seelines ,,,,

[NOTE:make sure you lable everything up and bank all surpluss seeds and polen in the deep freeze,,gota have backup!!]

you could go MASSIVE at this point for presevation sakes,,,but its up to you

at this point you have 625 parralel seedlines,,,,if you DO have a specific goal in mind, grow everthing out and select for unique traits,,,cross parralell lines to achive stabilization of these unique traits,,,

Im currently in the same predicament. I got this strain that cant be had anymore. Ive popped 4 seeds before i knew they cant be had anymore. So far 1 female in veg, 1 male that i collected pollen from,1 didnt germ,and 1 being sexed. All males will have there pollen collected, and any subsequent females will get pollinated.

Personally I'd rather have some hybrids than trying a pure line but honestly it is nice having some pure lines for sale! It's just that the at home seed bank can get crazy and turns into some bad seed deals online!

People just selling off what they did and they didn't even do a good job but it looks interesting...and just not all very uniform and not exactly what you wanted to search through!

Not really wanting pheno searches that just turn into an IBL project to be satisfied! Honestly I'd rather just get strains that are all indica or some sativa in them and make a few strains for myself...that just combine what I was looking for with my own unique flavor...cause honestly a lot of seed sales are just old things that look unique but not as much as advertised.

I guess if you cross blueberry with something you really want that flavor to stand out with some traits of what you crossed with! People still say that the original blueberry male is gone and that is a lie, I don't think just one existed!

Both!

It's arguable that seeds hold more genetic diversity and value ,, although clones perhaps hold more 'cultural' value once established , enjoyed and circulated

Make clones and seed it to a variety of males including that of it's own,, 1 in 3 crosses usually makes a nice combination IME
