Never use a Brita filter

I have well water and my main house filter needs to be changed so I figured I'd run my tap water thru a brita filter just to take some of the rust out, the damn thing lowered my pH by over 2 points. The water went from a 6.3 to a 4.2.

Hmm. That might be of use to some of us actually. My tap comes out at a pH of ~8 and while I've found that the Brita doesn't remove much/lower the EC/ppm very much, lowering the pH without pH down would be wonderful, as I have to do it every feeding. I will look into this!

I used the brita for a couple years, the ph out can vary, mostly mine went from 8 to about 6, worked well for me, but I did find a filter a couple times that came out lower, around 4, so you do have to check. Otherwise it is a good system, workable and cheap.

Brita Almost Killed My Plants. Returned To RO Everything Was OK.
Brita's Filters Do Not Remove Fluoride, Salts & Other Stuff. Up To 40 Gals. Per Filter.
But Since You Use Well Water It Shouldn't Matter I Think?

the best way is obviously rain water if you can collect it in a clean manner, just to state the obvious for everyone!

if i dont have any, i fill up a huge tank of water which sits in the sun for two days before it gets emptied and the u.v's are supposed to cause alot of the more unstable crap in there like the chloride and flouride and some others to largely evaporate off, and imo it does work, but it wont help with pH, calcium or high metal water though.

calcium fucks weed right up!

just chars and smoulders, when smoked, and wont burn grey (or white)......... its real bad news high calcium water !

the best thing I've found latley, in Socal anyways , is the ' Glacier water stations ' that are practicaly everywhere. These are outdoor filter stations like you see in the grocery stores..You can get your RO water , at anytime , for only 5$ for 15 gallons ( 3 -5gal jugs) .

Water PH out of these filter stations is a perfect 6.0 everytime.

I mix 1/4 crazy LA tap water, that gives me more than enough minerals along with AB nutes.

IMO investing in a quality RO system is as important as the genetics of the plants you are growing. Your water is the base of all of the nutrients you are providing to the plants. If you start off w/ nothing in the water, you control exactly what the plant gets.

But I'm Still Looking For The Cheapest & Smallest RO System. I Only Need About 50 Gals. A Month. If Anybody Knows Of Such A System Please Let Me Know.

I don't trust those outdoor "Glacier" water machines. You are at the mercy of the employee servicing the filters when they should be changed. I once bought 20 gallons from a machine and tested the water..................PPM was 105 & ph was 7.5!! WTF!!

I found that it also increases ppm of the water... My pure untreated well water comes out at 28ppm.. After runnning it through the brita it's upwards of 45... So in my case instead of taking shit outta the water the britta filter added something to the water the ppm meter could read.

Hasn't effected my ph, but my ph is very acidic to begin with... If your well is hooked up to a ph nuetrilzer, maybe the brita was able to filter out some of the calcium or whatever they add to nuetrilize your water..

I was dead set on getting one of these units before finding out that my tap is only 100ppm, but I still might upgrade to one soon. I have seen them on the internet for as little as $1.99 + shipping, at some point I saw 2 for $10 shipped.... So even if the filters that come with it are the ones to use (and not the "replacement filters") then it's still dirt cheap....
