3X3X5 Canna Coco, Fluorescent Grow

V

Voodoo

Hey all, this is my first post, first real grow. I figured I would do a combination intro/intro to the garden. First off, the garden is:
Flowering:
(2) P91 (poway class of 91)
(2) White Diesel
(1) Madness

Vegetative:
(1) P91
(1) White Diesel
(1) Madness
(1) Lambs Bread

So I decided to run Coco in 5 inch pots for veg, 10 inch for flowering. The 5 inch canna pots have 1 large scoop of Sparetime Organic's seabird guano 13/10/2 mixed into the 30/70 perilite & coco mix. The larger buckets have 3 large scoops of Sparetime's seabird guano. Its a top water setup, just a really basic closet setup that requires damn near zero maintenance.

Now for the part that makes everyone go "wait, what?" Im doing it all fluorescent. The flowering setup has two panels that hold 6 CFLs each, 12 total for flowering. They are a mix of 26W, some 2700K, some 3500K, some 5000K. Vegetative has 8 bulbs, all of which are 5000K. My total setup uses 536 watts. That's everything including fans and lights, both flowering and vegetative.

Heres a shot of the setup:

i think u should back of the N if you can, your plants do look nice, not trying to diss your grow but you have bear claw n nute burn, ease up on the nutes a little.

I absolutely agree! I tried a foliar feeding agent and it immediately cooked em! Ive since stepped it back, but I didn't realize how aggressive some of these things can be.

i would prune up the P91... Its one strain that really needs all its popcorn buds to be removed... Basically i only keep the top budsites for each branch... So all the popcorns/ squafy nugs underneath i get rid of... whatever is only gonna end up being a bonghit in the end, is not worth it... All that waisted energy will go to the tops if you prune em.

If you dont prune the P91 your left with a ton of leafy airy bonghits...

Everything looks good, cant wait to see how things finish up for ya!

Spicoli nailed it. You gotta do a clear-cut from the trunk to the middle of each branch at least.

Thanks for the help guys! Well its a new week, so time for more pictures!

Per Shan and Spicoli's suggestions, I clear cut one of the P91's to the middle of each branch. I cut the other after pics. I think the clear cut ones looks like a Charlie Brown christmas tree now, but whatever.

And then an overall shot.

As you can see I did some work in the garage and "found" a couple of reflectors in the old 70s style T12 fluorescents that we replaced with the T8s from the original clone setup. The reflectors are taking care of a lot of lost light.

Any comments are appreciated!

reflected light off clf's isnt really worth the time or effort, it must be point source, its just to weak for anything but this. An youll notic with experienced growers alot them with hid grows skip the reflective material it really isnt worth a dam, ive seen 8 thousand watt roooms with mylar and huge top colas but at over 4ft away on the sides were the mylar is was total popcorn, with cfls that 4ft becomes more like 4 inches-

You're using 536 watts total. Here's what I would do with the same wattage:

1x400w HPS or CMH in air cooled hood, 1x6" centrifugal fan. A vortex at that size uses ~100w. Mag ballast will realistically pull 430w. Of course if you have the cash, dig ballasts are silent and use less power/put out more lumens, but mag ballasts are about half the price.

That was my first "real" grow setup in that it was the first one out of many attempts that produced top shelf meds. You will outyield those flos by probably double or more, imo with a real light.

id go to htg garden supply and get a 150hps for 69$ or a 250hps for 117$, for sure the 150 will be alot cooler and i suspect the 250 might also be, i recently fired up my 150hps and compared to my 100 watts of clfs i think its even if not cooler then them.

Dont bother them vodoo, they didnt see/read the part about that being total wattage of veg AND flower AND fans, i like your grow, showing us that everybody have their own way of doing it, still producing nice buds and having fun, wich it is all about.

Sure, Strains, he can ignore the advice of someone who's been there, done that multiple times and carry-on producing less than he could, with lower quality from the same power usage. But it seems silly to do so in the name of "expressing your individuality through your grow methods".

I don't care what he choses to do in the end, it's not my grow and I'll never test the results. I just offer advice that WILL outproduce the setup he currently runs, in quality and quantity.

Here you go, a single NYC Diesel under a 400w hps and 6" fan. Veg, flower, same space:

Now I think you guys are a bit confused, 536 watts is my TOTAL setup, including the cloning / veg cabinet which is 3X2X6'6''!

Actually I appreciate the HPS input, though I wont be using one this time around. I want to see what a good baseline would be in a flouro grow versus a 400HPS in the same space using my particular method of growing.

I was told that the buds would be sparse, airy, worthless, the whole bit - but as you can see, they're budding away just fine. My point to this exercise is to see if fluorescents pull 80% as much as an HPS in the same space, good enough for me and the wife - we only go through about a 1/2 to 3/4oz a month.

Dhude, thats a good looking grow there! Im glad to see a 400 will be all I will need if switching down the road. How old was the plan in each pic (both age and duration into flowering) looks like its got about 100 colas on it (very cool).

i have a feeling you misunderstood my intentions; it seemed clear to me, that what you were suggesting exceeded his wattage now, and that i would have done the same as him in a given situation. I was just trying to "pat him on the back" you know? like good job. didnt mean to bash your advice, but neither did i see in the OP's orginal post any intentions of switching to HPS.
You gave good advice no doubt, plz lets keep this on topic and without the hate!

Still think youre doing an excellent job voodoo
*edit* you too Dhude
btw i did too start here, and moved on to 2x 600w hps ;)

Yes, Voodoo is doing a fine job with readily available materials. His garden looks nice and healthy.

I've run the little 400 in cabs several times, usually right after moving and needing something quick. Typically 30-35d veg will fill the screen with a single plant vegging under that light. In the pics, the plant veg'd 35 days from clone, first pic is D21 flowering, second one is D57-ish, about 10 days into flushing. She was cut at 63.

Good luck, looking forward to a smoke report on the White Diesel. How does she smell?

Good info there, Im always interested in seeing how long people grow em out and how they prune/bend/manicure their plants. I've had the white diesel before, pretty much exactly the high you would expect from a cross of White Widow and Sour Diesel. Sour Diesely taste with that high THC brain dead feeling coupled with a mild energy boost. The plant smells great, nearly citrusy - very sweet, kinda piney, but distinctly diesel.

New week, new pics. The P91 and the White Diesel are just going like gangbusters. The madness seems to be flowering with equal vigor, despite the yellowing fan leaves. I made a compost tea solution and reapplied ferts to the Madness in an effort to see if the plant was N deficient, the yellow has not faded in the two days since, though the plant seems to be in an interesting vegetative flowering mode currently, so I think I'm going to sit back and see how things go.
