Customs Agents Seize 316,000 Bongs Disguised as Christmas Ornaments

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Thursday that agents found the highly decorated drug pipes in 860 boxes shipped from China. The cargo, estimated to be worth more than $2.6 million, had been described as glass figures and Christmas ornaments.

The bongs were seized Tuesday at the Los Angeles/Long Beach port complex.

Customs spokeswoman Cristina Gamez says the importer remains under investigation and there have been no arrests.

yeah i think if they listed the cargo as "smoking pipes" or "hookahs" there's probably like a super crazy tax on it, so they listed it as xmas ornaments (oh it's xmas, everyone love everyone and we'll not charge too much on taxes). It happens a lot with clothing and other stuff - they list the merchandise coming in as something cheaper than it really is, and they pay a shit load less in taxes. If they had just listed them as "smoking pipes" or something they would be in our stockings right now albeit the shipper would have had to pay more tax and would have had to charge more
