ready to clone... but...

Hi, some parts of my plant are larger than others, and while I can cut multiple 5-6" long clones from all over the plant. I have a few that, if cut from the same spot, would be nearly a foot long. which I think is too much plant material for the cutting to keep alive while it awaits roots...

that said (and never having done this myself), can you clone one branch twice? lets say my first cut is at the halfway-ish point of said-12"cutting, that is normal enough to root like any other cutting, BUT, can I cut the lower half of that also? it has like 6 nodes on it already, so I would split them 3-3. but will the second cutting that has been sort of "topped" root aswell? or will the stress from cutting it half be enough to keep the roots from forming quick enough?

hope that made enough sense. thanks

Yes you can clone a branch multiple times. Recently I read about this technique in detail but I don't remember if it was in a book or online. You might want to plug the top of each clone that has a cut top with honey to avoid infection.

Works fine, no need for honey or anything, just make sur the tops of each have a nice shoot, and put them in water as soon as you cut each piece..

To me, your length seems a bit long. I go 2-3 inches, 4-5 nodes, and sometimes shorter. I have done the same branch twice in a row and they seem just a wee bit more stubborn but it has worked for me. Going 6 inches twice may get you into a part of the stem that might be to woody(?). Hope that helps.

they stretched like crazy, so even to get 3 nodes, I am looking at roughly 4.5-5" tall. kind of sucks, but it is what it is. thanks, I WILL give a shot

and yes you can use the rest of a branch for a clone when the tip is removed, its like it was topped once, when it gets roots and starts to grow again

Hi Karynne,
I've done what you're suggesting. It seemed like a waste to just throw away the rest of the branch...so I stuck the bottom into a peat puck and got a pre-topped clone. Works fine.

my clones have a little bit of bud on them, they were flowered for 10-11 days. should I pull all of them off?

No, just let them be. The flowering tendency will slowly go away as the cutting re-veges. It is a little harder to clone from a flowering plant...but they should root. People do it all the time.

ok thanks, I believe I will be doing this sometime today, perhaps with pictures too

I was just worried that the stress from topping would be too much to root and maybe die

whoa, this thread got flipped around. that post ^^^ was not posted after that. but I did remove some of the buds, and make sure theres not too much leaf/plant material left in general

K,
Ya, this post scrambling has been happening ever since they did system maintenance a few days ago. I'm getting some very strange behaviors with the Forum.

Good luck with your clones. Some pistils will still grow back but eventually it will revert. 24 hours of light helps. Good luck,

it is on 24 hour light in an aero cloner. I've honestly never cloned before, I always grow from seed, so even with my experience I was definitely worried cutting them up. Went smoothly though, 45* cuts, a shotglass full of clonex gel, then instantly dropped into an aero-port. the cloner runs 24/7 also
