Kenaf (Hibiscus Cannabinus L)

While in FL. selling organic veggie plants at a local famers market this spring. I ran into a gentlemen giving out Kenaf seeds. I ended up getting about 500 of these dark brown heart shaped seeds. He said they were really good for third world countrys. For food and shelter, as well as giving back mucho oxegen to the enveroment. Has anybody ever grown these seeds before? Or knows more about them?

Some types have heart shaped leaves and others look EXACTLY like cannabis until they flower. Useful for fiber. Some dudes (in Oregon?) were (temporarily) busted for growing it. I always thought it would be a fun practical joke to plant a couple of pounds of the seed throughout a city!

3rd base and Stromcrow. Thanks for the info. I have read about kenaf just looking to see if anyone has had experiece with growing it. Selling it or making products with it. This might be what i am looking to grow. It has fiber content of hemp but wont pollenate my cannabis growing on same land. although i really do like hemp and have though about growing it. i just dont like the idea of it cross pollenating my lovely THC laden plants.

grew out acres in college years ago......had a prof from India that was experimenting with/kenaf and it's ability to extract excessive salt build-ups from chemically overfarmed areas.....had more than one person think it was the ganj and helped themselves......one hell of a headache i bet.....

Kenaf has many potentials........best to ya in your quest.............

Now if I wasn't a grower or smoker it could be cool to stuff the front yard with that plant:)

Mtn.nector. very interesting. So what were the results? Is that similar to the prosess of bioremidation? using plants to fix soil instead of microbes?

I grew some Kenaf this season, it tolerates drought and heat, and gets really tall! And it's quite woody. It's a member of the same family of plants that includes hollyhocks, rose of sharon, cotton, okra and others. My strain is the Louisiana type (with rounding leaves), but many others look ALOT like our favorite illegal plant. It won't pollinate cannabis, not at all, ever. The seed pods take 4 months to ripen. Grow'em!

mironit, thanks for the info. I'll check your site out and give you an email.

Solar Puffer, what i would like to know is.... what did you do with your harvest? Did you sell it? or use it to make something on your land? very interested in the plant. Like i said it sounds great over hemp do to the fact that it has the same uses and I can farm it without it pollenating my Cannabis plants like hemp would.

The first time I was told about Kenaf from a man named Bill Loftus. Bill had a piture of the plant growing in a field. It looked so much like cannabis sativa. Except for the pretty flowers growing on it. Right away I thought about a book Jack Herer wrote. "The Emperor wears no clothes" (dont quote my words, i dont have the book with me) It mentioned that the U.S. goverment didnt totally make Marijuana illegal. You could still grow it as long as it didnt have the leaves or flowers on it. I couldnt help but laugh to myself. (I mean people were looking at me.) Bill tells me, He has kenaf and they have even bred out the the leaf shape on some of there varietys to NOT resemble cannabis. plus the flowers on it. I though it was a big joke towards to Gov. before i realilized it had been around for centuries.

Kenaf, Kenaf, oh where have you been?

How tall have they for you Solar puffer? how thick is the stalk? do you need a chain saw to cut them down? and how did you find out about Kenaf?

Hello fello growers. I came across an interesting use for Kenaf.
Reshearch shows that Kenaf core can be used as a containerized growth medium component.
Does your soilless soil contain Kenaf? Anybody know of any companies using Kenaf as an aditive?
