buddy of mine has been repotting in week 3 of flower for over a year now in a sea of green op, so he's doing it twice a month to a few dozen plants. i always wondered why he doesnt do it before and give them a chance to develop better roots... but they'll be fine, just be gentle...

Hi habeeb , i do this a lot esp when plants unexpectedly outgrow their pots up to mid flower.

Have seen no problems so far and is probably a lot less stressfull than the drying out that could occur if left , rootball autopsies show that they use the extra space but not much if done past mid flower.

Have heard anecdotal evidence that certain strains/crosses repond badly to this includeing Blueberry but not sdeen it myself.

all i can add....lol...when you do pot up...and as most of us do...DONT turn the pot upside down....do it side ways...unless you like sticky buds covered with dirt...lol...done it once...learned that lesson.HH. =]-~

you can transplant anytime.
just get sombody to give you a hand and be delicate.
make sure your soil is moist and all soil and roots should come away nicely as a whole from the pot its in now.
(good luck).

I agree Ludicris. I typically re-pot during the second week of flowering after sex has been determined. Males usually show their sex first----the pollen sacks are easy to spot. It's really an exciting time because you get to see if you were able to "beat the 50/50 odds" of sex selection. If you can get better then 50/50 with every run then you are doing something right to influence sex! I start in beer cups (dilute the rich soil with perlite so as not to burn/overfeed babies) I then repot to gallon size. 2 weeks into flowering I go to 5 gallon size.

After repotting to the larger container for flowering I give the young female adults a heavy feeding of FoxFarms Big Bloom----one cup per gallon! I also add 4 drops of superthrive at that time. A quarter teaspoon of MgSo4 doesnt hurt either in promoting bud sites.

Since I'm repotting early with no major buds (2 weeks into flowering) I often tip the pot upside down to get it out of it's container. Like you said, you have to be careful and delicate. Don't forget to cut off your LST strings while youre at it too!

I wanted to up-pot becuase of some space I cleared out, that I didn't think I was gonna have for this round.

I was under the impression that 2-3 weeks after flowering has been initiated the root systems ceases to grow any further. I had two plants that really needed to be transplanted but I did not because they were flowering. It would have greatly increased the yield. At four weeks it's too late from my understanding.

But if I had known what you believe to be true, that would have been convenient.

My mate pulled out his plants to add more perlite/vermiculite and stunted them during flower.

if your going to do this then I hope your very gentle with them ... otherwise flowering will be slowed and may not get thick colas..

you would transplant them just before the lights go out so they don't get shocked from the transplant then being in strong light. Also I would give them only water for a week then introduce nutrients again.

root growth wont stop when flowering but the root growth is minimal as the plant concentrates on bud development but its never to late to transplant.

just keep the pot sideways and push out the roots and soil ball together by poking your fingers through the holes on the bottom of the pot.

yes root growth is minimal. they do grow, but you won't see the awesome "root porn" seen in many pictures on this website. what i did to make mine work was the following...

take clone from tiny clone tray and transplant into 3"x3" pot, veg for a week or so or until plant is at desired height. then i take 6.5"x6.5" pots, fill halfway with soil, water heavily and put plant in it. then i fill in soil around the edges and pack it down firmly and add some water. watering heavily in the new soil encourages roots to grow down into it during the extended dark period. i then put them in 100% darkness for 72 to 96 hours, then put directly into bloom after that. this allows the roots to grow into the extra soil during the dark period, you may even notice an inch or so of new growth on the tops when you remove them from the dark environment, and also (from my observations) kick starts flowering, sex usually shows within a week (mine are all female - i use clones, but this fact might interest seed growers :joint: ). click my link to see how this system worked for me.

hope this helps anyone looking for a better system of pot upgrading!

oh, and the root porn on my plant root systems is great, i wish i had a picture to show you! much better than when i repotted during bloom and ALWAYS better than the root systems of my friends plants who repots during week 3 of bloom.

There not really going to be inhibited by the pot size at this point, that point was like a m3 weeks ago. the roots dont grow much if at all when flowering there just vectors for water and nutrients to be provided to the growing buds. It wont harm your plant other than stressing it a bit to transplant it now. i transplant my rooted clones into the pot i plan on finishing them in. waiting for a plant to become root bound or fill up a container stunts it for as many days as it was growing into the walls of your container. flushing your root system to ensure its health might be a better solution?...
